Catamounts slip past Camels in OT

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Regan Ward scored her first goal of the season in the 99th minute and Western Carolina (3-1) defeated Campbell (1-3) Friday night at the Catamount Athletics Complex.

Ward took a dribble from the left side and from the corner into the left side of the goal for the golden goal finish in extra time.

"Credit to Western's players, they turned it up a level in overtime," said head coach Samar Azem. "That was a really tough environment to play in, at their place with a  big crowd celebrating a lot of rich history in their program."

Neither team netted a goal in regulation and the Catamounts edged the Camels with 15 compared to Campbell's nine and were able to fire three shots on frame to Campbell's one. Western finished with 19 shots (seven on goal) to Campbell's nine. Western Carolina edged the Camels in corner kicks four to three and commited 12 fouls to Campbell's seven.

In regulation, Erin Scott picked up two saves along with one team save to keep WCU off the board. Jacquelin Gnassi recorded one save in the first 90' for the Catamounts and picked up the win between the pipes.

McKenna de Graff fired off three shots to lead with Camels followed by Emma Bushee with two and framed up one on target.

"I thought we made progress since the last game, their defender cleared one off the line and the game could've changed the game." Azem continued, "With that said, we need to learn to keep the ball more, break teams down more, and our younger players are going to have to give us more consistency. We have a short turn around so we will need to put this behind us quickly.

Next up Campbell continues its road trip on Sunday at Furman. The 2:00 p.m. start time can be watched live on the SOCON Digital Network or followed through live stats and on twitter @GoCamelsWSOC.
