GREENVILLE, S.C. - Claudia Murphy and Erin Houlihan registered a goal apiece and Furman (4-1) defeated Campbell 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Scott Soccer Stadium.
Claudia Murphy opened the match's scoring with a header played in by Erin O'Hearn off a corner kick in the 20
th minute.
In the 75
th minute, Erin Houlihan scored the final goal after Caitlyn Reilly found her foot where she finished with a shot to the top of the net.
"Our opening stretch was intended to challenge us and it has. We are learning by fire and the moments of progress are extending with each game" said head coach
Samar Azem. "Furman is a good team but we gave them too much time and space on the ball. Our fatigue set in the last 20 minutes where we gave them 11 shots in 20 minutes and a goal. That's something we will learn from."
Campbell (1-4) was able to fire off five shots with three on frame to Furman's 21 with 12 on goal. Furman was able to create eight corner kick opportunities to Campbell's two.
Azem continued, "We want to keep the ball more, force teams to defend more, and force them to solve problems we create in our attacking half. We did that for 20 minutes in the second half against one of the best teams we've faced and that's something we will build on. It's still early and we will keep progressing very quickly."
Kellsey Weaver picked up the win after recording three saves over the full 90 minutes.
Erin Scott registered seven saves over the full time to go along with three team saves for the Camels.
Four different Campbell starters –
Jessica Donald,
Alexa Genas,
Kylee Arno, and
McKenna de Graaf – as well as one reserve,
Skylar Wilcox, got off shots for the Camels with Donald's and Genas' on frame.
Campbell closes out its three game road trip on Thursday, September 6 when the Camels travel to Greenville, N.C. to take on East Carolina at 7:00 p.m.
Azem closed, "Our next game is even tougher and we're ready for the challenges that game brings."
