RADFORD, Va. - After a tightly contested first half, Radford netted four goals and extended its win streak to five straight as the Highlanders defeated Campbell 4-0 Wednesday night at Cupp Memorial Stadium.
Jessica Wollmann gathered the pass in the attacking third from Ana Revollo and then broke away to the left side where she curled the ball past the Campbell keeper for the opening goal in the 53
rd minute.
Campbell then gave up two own goals in the 54
th and 58
th minute before Nelia Perez netted her second goal of the season in the 66
th minute. Jasmine Casarez played the ball to the foot of Perez who hit a low strike from 17 yards out to the back of the net.
"We were two different teams tonight," said head coach
Samar Azem. "We moved the ball well and intentionally in the first half. One of the better halves of soccer we've played all year. But you cannot leave good teams alive. We need to finish set pieces and we need to finish opportunities. We have to start putting the ball in the back of the net."
Radford produced 21 shots to Campbell's 12 and placed 11 on frame to Campbell's five. The Camels recorded eight corner kicks to the Highlanders' six.
Courtenay Kaplan picked up the win and hauled in five saves over the full time while three different Campbell keepers split time between the pipes.
Reaghan Duval saw her second action of the season. The freshman recorded one save over 20 minutes of action.
"The second half we unraveled. We passed the ball into their best player to give them the go ahead, we scored two unnecessary own goals, and put ourselves in a hole," Azem continued. "Radford is a very good team, they have some very dangerous players, I felt like we beat ourselves tonight and we have to have a higher level of mental toughness."
Radford edged the Camels in shots in the opening period eight to seven but the Camels kept the pressure on early with six corner kicks in the first half.
In the opening 45 minutes,
Erin Scott fended off four Radford shots on goal to keep the Highlanders off the board.
Alexa Genas' best moment of the match came when he fired off one shot on goal in the opening half after
Shannon Wratchford played the ball to her foot off the corner. Wratchford also drilled a shot from outside the box that hit off the crossbar in the 42
nd minute for Campbell's best scoring opportunity of the opening period.
Campbell continues conference play on Saturday, September 22 as the Camels travel to the mountains to take on UNC Asheville with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
