Bushee, Turner lead Campbell past UNCA

Emma Bushee and Cameron Turner both recorded their first goals of the season for the Camels

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Freshmen Emma Bushee and Cameron Turner both netted their first goals of the season as Campbell defeated UNC Asheville 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Soccer Field.

Bushee opened the scoring slate in the 10th minute after Campbell had held the ball in their half for the majority of the opening minutes. The freshman from San Marcos, California worked past a defender just outside the 18 on the left side and bent a shot past the diving keeper into the top right corner of the net.

Campbell almost pushed its lead to 2-0 just 16 minutes later as Alexa Genas crossed the ball into the box to Rosie O'Neal who tapped the ball into the back of the net but O'Neal was called offsides.

Turner capped off the Campbell scoring in the 32nd minute after Alexa Genas played the ball into Turner who gathered the deflection off the keeper and finished for the Camels' second score of the afternoon.

"Our team is incredibly resilient – after losing in the hardest way Wednesday, we had every player out on the field during voluntary individual blocks. That's unique," said head coach Samar Azem. "UNCA is a very defensively organized team and they're good at what they do and I thought the players performed aspects of what we do well to earn the win. It was a definitive team effort."

Campbell kept the ball in their attacking third for a majority of the match and were able to produce 11 shots with six on target while the Bulldogs were only able to get off four shots with three on target.

Erin Scott fended off all three of the UNCA shots on goal to pick up the win and her first shut out of the season. The senior from Dallas, Texas entered the match leading the conference in saves and has now pushed her save total to 46 on the year.

"It's great to get a shutout, it's great to see the leadership grow, and it's great to see two freshmen step up and score goals. We created some good opportunities and we want to keep doing that," continued Azem.

Campbell mustered out four corner kicks to Asheville's two but were able to find many scoring chances on crosses from the outside. The Camels also created scoring opportunities off the dribble. Alexa Genas fired a shot from outside the 18 but the Bulldog keeper was able to get her hands on it to keep the Camels from pushing their lead to 3-0 in the 39th minute.

Bushee continued to attack and sent her second shot on goal of the game in the 57th minute from the right side but the diving keeper made the save to keep Campbell from extending its lead.

Azem closed, "One of my favorite things about this win was seeing our girls celebrate after the first goal and after the game. You could tell it was a weight lifted off their shoulders. We tell them all the time confidence is earned by the work you put in. Today they earned it and we are building up from here."

Next up, Campbell returns to the confines of Eakes Athletics Complex for its conference home opener against High Point. The 7:00 pm kickoff can be watched live on ESPN+. You can always follow Campbell women's soccer on twitter- @GoCamelsWSOC.
