Getting to know Skylar Wilcox

Through five games in her final season, Skylar Wilcox has stepped into a leadership role nicely. The Spotsylvania, Virginia native recently sat down for a conversation with Kahlil Dixon.

When did you start playing soccer?

I started playing when I was four years old on a little league team.

What position do you play and what role do you play on the team?

I'm a midfielder, I play outside mid normally. My job is to attack when we need it and then defend, but I am also there to distribute the ball, get some crosses in, and finish at the top of the box. I'm like the basis of all of the positions put into one.

Do you have any pregame rituals?

First I'll heat up my hamstrings just because I have tight hamstrings, and then I normally get changed and hang around my locker.  Then I get pumped and hyped with my girls in the locker room.

Who is your role model?

Both my mom and my dad. They've both worked so hard and their work ethic to me is just incredible. That inspires me to be who I am every day on and off the field, and in life.

Do you have any hobbies outside of soccer?

I enjoy thrift shopping. I'm not really artistic or anything but I enjoy just sleeping and eating ice cream.

How would you describe the teams chemistry so far?

This season we have a lot of new freshmen, nine of them. I think this year especially, it was really good to get them integrated with the older players because they all came in summer session two, so we kind of already had a general idea of who they were. In the past we haven't done that, so I think this season has been really good for our chemistry because we did have that extra time and it is helping us on the field as well.

How does it feel being a senior on this year's team?

I definitely feel like my role is about the same, just a little bit bigger, but I definitely feel like any senior does on a team. Its their last go round they want to just kill it and win, but it's just bittersweet because you just want to make every time your best time.

What kind of personal goals do you have?

I don't really know what I want to do after school. I think im going to try to get my masters somewhere local in my hometown which is in Virginia. On the field I want to be quicker releasing the ball, find the open feet and then just take more shots and try to get more shots on goal so people can run on to it. Just being more of a play maker I could say.

Is there a reason why you wear 14?

Personally no. When I came in, someone else had number nine so I just said I'll take whatever. I'm not really one to move numbers once I've stuck with one so I just kept 14 and I've worn it ever since.

Do you have any teammates that you feel have helped you play well and improve?

I loved playing with Shelby Denkert. She was just the person to go to, the work horse. I really looked up to her and I still do on and off the field, she was the person that you knew always had your back.

What are some of your favorite quotes from your head coach?

Wow, she has a lot. I would say probably one that has really stuck with me is, "Take one thing at a time. As in one pass at a time, one tackle at a time, not totally focused on the end goal but what you can control in that moment."
