Camels draw with High Point

Erin Scott kept the Panthers off the board over 110 minutes of action

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Erin Scott hauled in 10 saves and recorded her second consecutive shutout as Campbell drew with High Point, 1-1, Wednesday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.

High Point (3-5-3, 1-0-2) created two potential game winning opportunities in extra time but Scott kept the Panthers off the board.

In the 93rd minute, Brook Parsons struck the ball with her left foot shot from the top of the box but Scott leaped and tipped the potential game winner up over the crossbar.

In similar fashion, Ashlyn Kearney played the ball into the box off the corner kick to Becca Palmer who hit the one timer towards the top of goal but Scott made another leaping save to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Campbell (2-7-1, 1-1-1) created two scoring chances of its own in the overtime period. Rosie O'Neal played the ball to the foot of Emma Bushee who sent a shot high in the 108th minute.

The most promising attack of the overtime slate came in the 109th minute when Callie Beckwith found Alexa Genas in the box after playing in a free kick from 30 yards out. Genas' head connected with the ball but the header sailed just high.

"High Point has a bunch of talented players. They are going to continue to be a power house in the conference," said Campbell head coach Samar Azem. "Our players played really well tonight. To get a draw against a good team like that when we're trying to come into our own and find our identity just shows you what our players mindsets are like."

The two teams played an even back-and-forth first half. Campbell edged the Panthers in shots with 10 to HPU's nine.

One of Campbell's best chances of the match came when Jessica Donald controlled the ball in the middle of the pitch just outside the 18 and then rocketed a shot that clanged off the right post.

Alexa Genas created a pair of chances in the opening 45 minutes as well. In the 32nd minute the junior received a pass at the top of the box and dribbled past a defender to the right side and just missed the shot wide left. Later in the 38th minute, the New Mexico native took the long cross from Ruthie Riley from midfield to outside the 18 and fired another shot but it sailed high.

High Point's best opportunity came in the 46th minute when Alex Denny played the ball in to Skylar Prillaman who fired a shot from point blank range in front of the net but Erin Scott made a terrific diving save to keep things tied, 0-0.

Campbell continues its play at Eakes Athletics Complex this weekend as the Camels welcome Winthrop. The 7 p.m. start time can be listen to the game online at gocamels.com.
