GREENSBORO, N.C. - Jacob Planell scored the game winner in overtime as UNC Greensboro defeated Campbell 2-1 Tuesday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
In the 93rd minute, Planell took the cross from Brooks Rice and fired it into the bottom right corner of the net for the game winner in over time.
UNCG (4-5-0) got on the score board first after Austin Matthews played the ball in from near the corner flag to the far post where the ball deflected off a Campbell defender for the own goal.
"It looked like we were a bit heavy legged from the weekend and unfortunately we weren't as sharp in the plays where we needed to be and the own goal put us in a hole," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder.
After a 48th minute own goal and playing with a man down,
JJ Donnelly drew a foul in the box while chasing down a loose ball headed towards the end line to force a penalty.
Michael Barrow buried the penalty kick for the equalizer and the last goal in regulation in the 77th minute.
"After the own goal, I thought we responded well playing a man down and getting one back. It's just unfortunate to make a mistake in overtime," continued Fonder.
The Camels kick off Family Weekend activities Friday with a 7 p.m. start against Presbyterian at the Eakes Athletic Complex, followed by post-match fireworks sponsored by student life.
"This week was a tough week on us. We had Radford on the weekend followed by UNCG and then the weekend again with Presbyterian. Obviously the two conference games paramount and unfortunately, we dropped the midweek game but if we can get right for the weekend that's the most important thing," closed Fonder.
