Flames spoil swimming's season opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell freshman Annie Sanchez won the 200 freestyle and figured into a victorious 200 free relay to highlight the Fighting Camels swimming team's season-opening meet against Liberty Saturday.

The Flames, however, carried the day, 159-98.

Sanchez struck first in the 200 free, turning in a time of 1:53.82, which bested the second-place finisher, Liberty's Elizabeth Masnusson, by nearly two seconds.

Sanchez carried that momentum into the 200 free relay, when she teamed with Megan Everritt, Hannah Kendall and Sarah Wilson to compile a winning time of 1:37.43.

With a swim of 4:47.47, Senior Karah Sizemore posted the third Camels win of the day in the 400 IM.

Liberty got out to quick lead, winning the day's first three events while sprinting out to a 41-19 lead. In total, the Flames racked up wins in 11 events.

Campbell returns to action on Oct. 5 when it travels to Gardner-Webb for its 2018-19 road opener.
