BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After a runner-up finish in the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, Campbell University has swept the Big South Conference weekly men's golf honors.
Pontus Nyholm was named golfer of the week, while
Claude Churchward was named freshman of the week.
In a 15-school field, only host NC State (-22, 284-278-280—842) finished ahead of Campbell (-18, 280-278-288—846). The Camels placed ahead of 13 teams, including Virginia Tech of the ACC and Big Ten Member Maryland on the par-72 Lonnie Poole Golf Course layout.
A junior from Gavle, Sweden, Nyholm produced his third, fourth and fifth rounds of par, or better, golf to tie for third place individually (68-68-72—208) at 8-under par. Nyholm logged his third-consecutive top-five showing at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate after a runner-up showing in 2017 and fifth-place tie a year ago. He made 16 birdies (tied for third in the field), was 2-under on the par-3 holes (T5) and six-under on the par-5 layouts (T7).
The result marked Nyholm's 13th-career top-10 finish and second-straight top-five to start the 2019-20 season.
A native of Calignac, France, Churchward (71-72-75—218) tied for 26th in his second collegiate event. He played the par-3 holes at 2-under, tied for fifth in the 87-golfer field. He has shot par, or better, golf in three of six collegiate rounds.
The Camels continue their fall schedule Oct. 21-22 in the Little Rock Invitational at Chenal CC in Little Rock, Ark.
