Jacquel leads Camels over Blue Hose 6-2

Three-goal, two-assist outburst sparks CU's top offensive output of year

CLINTON, S.C. – Thibaut Jacquel scored three times and set up two other goals Saturday to lead Campbell to a 6-2 win over Presbyterian at Martin Stadium.

The Camels (10-2-1, 4-0 Big South) posted their highest offensive output of the season and most goals scored in a match in over a year to stretch their winning streak to seven matches. Presbyterian (4-9, 2-1) had won four of its previous five outings, but had no answer for the league's leading scorer.

A junior from Saverne, France, Jacquel scored in the 10th and 21st minutes before finishing off his hat trike in the 58th. He also set up goals by Alex Egeonu in the 60th and 71st minutes for a career-high eight-point outing.  Eren Elbustu added an 89th minute strike for his third of the season.

The Big South Conference's leading scorer, Jacquel now has 13 goals and two assists for 28 points in 13 outings.  He has scored 11 goals during CU's 7-match win streak and found the nets in six of the seven contests.

In a rematch of last year's Big South final, Presbyterian twice equalized only to see Jacquel answer.

Less than three minutes after Jacquel's opening strike, Cesar Sancho nodded in a corner kick to draw PC level 1-1.  Jacquel then put the Camels back in front in the 21st minute off Matt Lock's feed.  CU nearly extended the lead but Bissafi Dotte and Jacquel in the final 15 minutes of the opening period.

Sancho added his second goal of the game in the 54th minute to deadlock the contest 2-2.

However, Jacquel pushed CU back in front when he controlled a failed clearance in the box and slotted home his 13th goal of the season.

"It was a mature performance out of group," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder.  "It was tough playing two away games in a week, but our maturity showed.  The guys really want to fight to win the league again.  Both matches took multiple goals to win, and our team really rose to the occasion."

The Camels finished Saturday with a 14-10 edge in shots, 8-4 on target, and took four corner kicks to three for the Blue Hose.  Samuel Lechuga had two saves in the Campbell nets, while Valentin Kliebe made two stops for PC.

Campbell's 10-2-1 record through 13 matches is the program's best since the 1993 squad started 12-1 on the way to a Big South regular season title.  CU improved to 4-2-1 on the road this year and has four away victories in its current win streak.

The Camels host Gardner-Webb Wednesday (7 pm).  CU is undefeated (6-0-0) and has outscored its opponents 14-1 at home this year.
