Camels win 9th-straight; 7-1 at Asheville

Nosegbe double leads team's top scoring output this year

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After hitting season highs for goals, shots and shots on target Saturday, Campbell claimed its ninth-straight win after a 7-1 Big South Conference triumph at UNC Asheville.

The Camels (12-2-1, 6-0) scored just 57 seconds into the contest and led by six before the Bulldogs (3-9-1, 2-3) had a shot on target.  Aigbekan Nosegbe came off the bench to score twice, while Eren Elbustu, Matt Lock, Alex Egeonu, Moses Mensah and Caleb Martinez also found the nets for the Camels, who have won their last five away from home.

Campbell out-shot the Bulldogs 29-9, including a 13-2 edge in shots on target and took eight corner kicks to three for the hosts.

The Camels posted their largest winning margin ever against UNC Asheville, eclipsing a 6-1 win on Sept. 22, 1990, and won their fifth-straight in the series while improving to 18-3-1 all-time against the Bulldogs.

Elbustu gave the Camels the lead just 57 seconds into the contest with his fourth strike this year and the Camels matched their highest-scoring half of the season by taking a 4-0 lead at the break.

Lock doubled the advantage in the 28th minute off Thibaut Jacquel's assist.  The nation's leading scorer (34 points on 15 goals and 4 assists), Jacquel became the 31st player in Campbell history to reach 50 career points (19 goals, 12 assists) in just his 35th match.

Nosegbe pushed the edge to three in the 42nd minute off Alemu Mercer-Miko's service and Egeonu stretched his personal scoring streak to four matches just 1:14 later with his career-best fifth goal thanks to a George Bediko assist.

CU out-shot Asheville 13-1 in the opening half en route to its largest victory margin since a 7-1 triumph Sept. 4, 2018 at USC Upstate.

Nosegbe completed his double just 5:26 into the second period off Lock's team-leading sixth assist.  Freshman left back Moses Mensah tallied his first career goal 1:20 later off Ian Rees' feed to push the margin to 6-0.

Asheville did not record a shot on target until the 73rd minute and broke up the shutout one minute later on Tanner Gilliam's first goal of the season.

Sophomore transfer Caleb Martinez completed the scoring in the 77th minute off Elbustu's assist to push the Camel lead back to six.

"It's huge when you're playing on the road, and always good to make sure your group is focused and come out with the mental approach we had in the first half," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder.  "We did a good job of showing once again how mature our team is. We're on a mission to win the Big South Conference, came out today and attacked from the start."

Samuel Lechuga (76 minutes) and Matt Karasinski (14) shared time between the posts for the Camels, who have surrendered only 32 shots on target over the last 14 outings.

Campbell's 9-match win streak is the longest win span in 5 seasons under Coach Fonder and the program's best since the 2008 squad reeled off 12-straight victories to reach the A-Sun final.  CU's 12-2-1 record through 15 matches is the program's best since the 1993 squad started 13-2 on the way to a Big South regular season title.

The Camels host 19th-ranked North Carolina Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in their final non-conference match of the regular season.
