Camels head to The Citadel for Saturday matinee

5th-straight year for regional matchup

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Coming off a tough overtime loss, Campbell continues a two-game road stretch Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. tip-off at The Citadel.  The game will air on ESPN3, while live audio will be available through GoCamels.com.

The Fighting Camels (2-1) dropped an 81-76 decision Tuesday at UNC Wilmington.  Ja'Cor Nelson scored 18 points with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, while Cory Gensler added 15 points and Cedric Henderson, Jr. 10, plus 6 boards for the Camels, who made just 5-of-21 threes.  UNCW had five players in double figures, shot 52 percent on the day and made 22-of-26 free throws, while the Camels went to the line only seven times.

The Citadel (0-2) opened with a 91-76 loss at home to UNC Asheville before suffering a 95-86 setback Tuesday at Georgia.

At UGA, Hayden Brown scored a career-high 26 points (4-7 threes) and Kaelon Harris added 16 points and 11 boards for The Citadel, which made 14-of-33 threes.

Cory Gensler (13.0) leads a balanced Campbell offense, followed by newcomers Cedric Henderson, Jr. (10.0), Jesús Carralero (9.7) and Nelson (9.7).

Brown, a junior forward, leads The Citadel in scoring (20.5), while freshman Fletcher Abee adds 12.5 points per outing.

The Camels and Bulldogs are meeting for the fifth-straight season.  Last year at Buies Creek, The Citadel ended a three-game losing streak in the series to the Camels with an 82-76 victory in a contest that included 15 lead changes and six ties.

Kevin McGeehan-coached Camel teams own an 8-5 record against Southern Conference schools over the last seven seasons.

The last time the teams met in Charleston, Campbell won 97-91 on Dec. 4, 2016.

  • Before the recent revival of the series, the Camels and Bulldogs went more than 30 years (Jan. 8, 1983 to Dec. 19, 2015) between games.
  • Campbell won three-straight games in the series with the Bulldogs, including two at Gore Arena.  CU defeated The Citadel 101-82 on Dec. 19, 2015 at Buies Creek before winning 97-91 on Dec. 4, 2016 in the Holy City Hoops Classic. In 2017-18 at Gore Arena, the Camels claimed an 87-77 victory behind 32 points from Chris Clemons, 16 from Cory Gensler and Andrew Eudy's double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.
  • On Dec. 18, 2018 in Buies Creek, The Citadel picked up its first win over the Camels since 1983.  However, only nine of the 18 players who competed in last year's game are still on the Bulldogs (5) and Camels (4) rosters.  Among returning players, Kaiden Rice had 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists for The Citadel, while Cory Gensler (18 points), Ja'Cor Nelson (8) and Trey Spencer (7 + 5 assists) are the top returning Camels from that day.  For the record, graduated Matt Frierson (24) and Lew Stallworth (21) led The Citadel, while Chris Clemons (21) topped Camel scorers.
  • In 3 career meetings with the Bulldogs, Cory Gensler is averaging 15.3 points and 3.7 assists.
  • The Citadel is 0-1 vs. Big South Conference members this season - a season-opening 91-76 setback against UNC Asheville (11/9) at McAlister Field House.  The Bulldogs also play at Longwood on Dec. 19.
  • Duggar Baucom-coached teams are 5-6 all-time vs. Campbell.  His VMI teams posted a 4-3 record in 7 games vs. the Camels from 2008-14.  Coach Baucom's squads are 2-4 all-time at Gore Arena.
  • The Military College of South Carolina, The Citadel had the highest percentage of any American college student body serving in the miltary during World War II.
  • Notable alumni of The Citadel are U.S. Senator "Fritz" Hollings and the late novelist Pat Conroy, who also penned a memoir, "My Losing Season," which chronicles his career as a member of the Bulldog basketball team.  Campbell season ticket holder Will Taylor was a freshman on The Citadel Basketball team that year (1966-67).
  • Through its first three games, Campbell has produced nine different double-figure scorers.  Cory Gensler (16), Jesús Carralero (15) and Cedric Henderson, Jr. (15) reached double figures in the opener at Coastal Carolina.  LaDarius Knight (13), Austin McCullough (12), Messiah Thompson (12), Trey Spencer (10) and Milos Stajcic (10) scored in doubles vs. Central Penn. Ja'Cor Nelson (18), Gensler (15) and Henderson (10) hit double-digits at UNCW.  Jordan Whitfield has scored a season-high 9 points twice already.
  • Paced by Gensler (13.0) and Henderson (10.0), eight Camels are averaging at least 6.0 points per outing, while nine are playing double-figure minutes.
  • In its 101-47 victory over non-Division I Central Penn on Nov. 8, Campbell's reserves (66) outscored the Knights bench by a 66-3 margin.  Even if the starting 5 Camels did not play vs. Central Penn, mathematically, the Camels would have won by 19 points.  Against Central Penn, no Camel played more than 18 minutes.
  • Three different Camels have led the team in scoring through 3 games: Gensler (16 at Coastal), Knight (13 vs. Central Penn) and Nelson (18 at UNCW).
  • Through its first three games, Campbell leads the Big South Conference - and ranks among the top-20 nationally in assist-turnover ratio (16th, 1.86), turnover margin (11th, 9.3) and turnovers per game (17th, 9.3).
  • Campbell leads the Big South and ranks 14th in the country in free throw percentage (.829).  The Camels were a perfect 15-of-15 from the line in their 75-74 season-opening win at Coastal Carolina.
  • Following Saturday's game, the Camels are off until they host former Atlantic Sun Conference rival Jacksonville on Monday, Nov. 25 at 8 p.m.
