Balanced Camels defeat The Citadel 87-73

CU bench outscores Bulldog reserves 39-18

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ja'Cor Nelson led five Camels in double figures with 18 points and Campbell defeated The Citadel 87-73 Saturday at McAlister Field House.
 
Cedric Henderson, Jr. added 13 points, Trey Spencer 12, Jesús Carralero 10 and Joshua Lusane 10 for the Camels (3-1), who shot 55 percent from the field (34-62) and led by as many as 22.
 
Hayden Brown led The Citadel (0-3) with 18 points, while Tyson Batiste and Fletcher Abee added 15 each for the Bulldogs, who made just 2-of-18 (.111) 3-pointers.
 
Campbell shot 58 percent in the opening half, made 8-of-18 threes, and led 48-33 at the break.  Cedric Henderson had eight first-half points, while Ja'Cor Nelson and Joshua Lusane added seven each.
 
The Bulldogs led 21-19 with 9:40 left in the opening period after Eddie Davis III scored on a layup, but the Camels answered with a 15-0 run that extended to 29-9.  Campbell led 48-28 with 1:33 left in the half on Trey Spencer's three.
 
Spencer's layup gave the Camels their largest lead (60-38) with 13:27 to play.  The Citadel trimmed the margin to as few as eight (71-63) with 4:37 to play when Batiste's lay-up capped a 10-1 run.  However, Gensler knocked down a three on the next possession and the Bulldogs were unable to get closer than 10 the rest of the way.
 
Nelson made 7-of-9 from the floor, grabbed six rebounds and had four steals for the Camels, whose reserves outscored The Citadel bench by a 39-18 margin.  Henderson made 5-of-8 from the floor, including 3-of-4 threes, while Spencer hit (5-of-9 shots), Carralero (4-of-5) and Lusane (3-of-4) all reached double digits off the bench.
 
The Citadel, which was coming off a 95-86 loss at Georgia, finished 19-of-29 (.655) from the line, while the Camels made 9-of-13 (.692) free throws.
 
Meeting for the fifth-straight season, Campbell defeated the Bulldogs for the fourth time in that span and improved to 2-0 at McAlister Field House.
 
The Camels return to action Monday, Nov. 25 when they host former Atlantic Sun Conference rival Jacksonville at 8 p.m.
