Charleston Southern holds off Camels 41-31

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Jack Chambers tossed four touchdown passes to help Charleston Southern hold off visiting Campbell 41-31 Saturday at Buccaneer Field in the 2019 finale for both squads.

The Buccaneers pulled to an even 6-6 overall and 4-2 in Big South play, while Campbell rounded out its season at 6-5 overall and 3-3 in league games. The Camels have won six games in each of the last three seasons, tying a school record for single season victories.

CSU led 27-7 with 3:26 to go before the half, but C.J. Freeman's 31 yard TD run, his first score as a Camel, brought CU within 27-14 at the break.

Darion Slade's 33 yard kickoff return coupled with a CSU penalty gave Campbell the ball on the Bucs' 36 yard line. The Camels used nine plays, including a 10 yard pass to Michael Wooten and an 11 yard touchdown run from Hajj-Malik Williams, to bring the Camels within a score at 27-21.

After Charleston Southern answered to extend the lead to 34-21, Campbell scored on back to back possessions, including a 32 yard Colin Gary field goal, set up by Kam Prewitt's interception. Williams' second TD run of the night, a six yard scamper that capped an 11 play, 76 yard drive, brought the Camels within three at 34-31 to start the fourth quarter.
Gary's field goal was his school record 10th of the season.

Kameron Brown's third touchdown catch of the night, coming with 9:18 to play, restored the two score lead for the Buccaneers, who held Campbell off the board during the fourth quarter to seal the win.

All three of Brown's catches went for touchdowns, totaling 32 yards. Demetrius Jones added an 11 yard TD catch, while Garris Schwarting tallied a game-high 124 receiving yards on five catches. Kendrick Bell added 123 yards rushing, while Jamari Dunbar also punched in a score.

Chambers completed 17-of-29 passes for 217 yards with four touchdowns and an interception.

Nick Salley and J.D. Sosebee both recorded eight tackles for CSU, with Salley adding a sack.

Williams led Campbell with 74 rushing yards and two touchdowns, also completing 11-of-23 passes for 144 yards and another TD. Johnathan Hawkins also ran for 66 yards, while Freeman rushed for 37 yards to go with his second quarter touchdown run. Jalen Kelsey also caught five passes for 75 yards and a score.

Justice Galloway-Velazquez posted a game-high 15 tackles, adding 1.5 stops for loss and a sack. Galloway-Velazquez finished his sophomore season with a school record 111 total tackles after coming into the game seven tackles shy of Jack Ryan's 2017 single-season stops mark.

Darion Slade also gathered 12 tackles for the Camels.
