Camels fall at No. 1 UVA 2-0 in NCAA 2nd round

CU finishes with school record-tying 17 wins

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Top-ranked Virginia scored a goal in each half and defeated No. 24 Campbell 2-0 Sunday in the NCAA Championship second round at Klöckner Stadium.

Spencer Patton scored in the 38th minute and Nathaniel Crofts added an insurance goal in the 85th for the Cavaliers (18-1-1), who registered their nation-leading 14th shutout against the country's third-ranked attack.

Campbell (17-3-2) saw its 15-match unbeaten streak come to an end against a squad that has allowed only seven goals in 20 matches.  The Camels entered the contest averaging 2.8 goals per game, but were limited to just two shots.

Give all credit to Virginia. They were prepared today and made it very difficult for us," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder.  "No one wants to think about it now because the loss is so fresh, but what we did this year was special, I think it's going to go down as one of the best seasons in Campbell history."

The Cavaliers went in front in the 38th minute when Crofts drove a low pass across the face of box and Spencer Patton finished at the left post for his third goal of the season.

The strike at 37:19 marked the first time the Camels trailed in a match since Oct. 9 at Winthrop.

Campbell's best chance of the opening period came in the 41st minute when Franck Momo swung a cross to the top of the box but Alex Egeonu's header stayed well high and wide of the right post.

CU's best chance in the second half came in the 68th minute when the nation's leading scorer Thibaut Jacquel (18 goals) slid a low ball across the area, but just out of the reach of a sliding Jalen James at the back/ post.

Keeper Samuel Lechuga kept the Camels within striking distance with a season-high six saves, including three from point-blank distance in the second half until Crofts put the game out of reach.

Axel Gunnarsson fed Crofts in the area and the UVA winger slotted the ball home for his sixth goal of the year.

UVA, which finished with a 19-2 edge in shots, will host the winner of the Syracuse at St. John's contest on Nov. 30 or Dec. 1.

NOTES: Campbell had won its last seven on the road, including an NCAA first-round 3-1 decision Thursday at James Madison before Sunday's result… Campbell had not trailed for 892 minutes before Sunday's first-half goal… Campbell stands 1-6-3 against nationally-ranked teams in 5 seasons under Fonder… Campbell's 17 wins tied a school record set in 1988 and its 15-match unbeaten streak tied the record established in 1971… CU fell to 0-6 all-time against top-ranked teams since 1982.
