FORT MYERS, FLA – For the second-straight day, Campbell rode a strong defensive effort to pick up a win at the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic.
Over the final 5:33 Sunday, the Camels (6-2) limited North Dakota to just 1-of-4 shooting from the floor and forced three turnovers to earn a 58-56 victory at Alico Arena. Campbell, which has won four of its last five outings, finished with a 2-1 record in the three-day event.
Cedric Henderson, Jr., scored a season-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting,
Messiah Thompson added 10 points and
Joshua Lusane added all eight of his points in the second half as the Camels ended UND's three-game win streak.
After Filip Rebraca's jumper tied the score at 51 with 2:03 to play, Henderson made a pair of free throws with 1:47 to play; then scored in the paint to push the lead to 55-51 with 1:16 left. Marlon Stewart pulled the Fighting Hawks (4-5) within 55-54 with 10 seconds to play, but missed the second of two from the line.
Lusane then converted twice from the stripe with six seconds to go. After Stewart made two more free throws with 0:04 remaining, Thompson hit the first; then missed the second from the line with two ticks to go. Kienan Walter rebounded, but North Dakota could not get off a shot before time expired.
In a game that included eight lead changes and eight ties, the Camels led 36-29 when Jesús Carralero knocked down a three with 13:50 to play. UND, however, responded with a 7-0 burst to knot the score.
Campbell shot 40 percent (20-55) from the floor, made 7-of-16 threes (44 percent) and 7-of-9 from the line (.779), but committed only eight turnovers.
UND hit 45 percent of its shots (20-44), 4-of-17 triples (24 percent) and 12-of-16 (.750) from the stripe, but had 18 turnovers.
Campbell's bench outscored the UND reserves 23-3.
Henderson, Jr. was named to the FGCU Classic All-Tournament team after averaging 12.6 points, 4.3 boards and 1.7 assists over the course of the three day tournament.
After a break for final exams, Campbell returns to action Dec. 14 at East Carolina in a 4:00 p.m. tip-off.
