BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After playing seven of its first nine games away from home, Campbell (6-3) returns to Gore Arena Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. start against Colonial Athletic Association member Elon (4-7).
The Camels are coming off a 79-67 loss Saturday at East Carolina that ended a two-game win streak.
Cedric Henderson, Jr. led CU with a career-high 18 points, plus 6 rebounds and 3 blocks, while
Milos Stajcic (11),
Austin McCullough (11) and
Jordan Whitfield (11) also hit double figures.
Elon has won two of its last three, including a 91-60 victory Saturday over Division III member NC Wesleyan. Hunter McIntosh led four Phoenix players in double figures with 15 points, including 5-of-5 from 3-point distance, and Elon made 19-of-39 threes (.487).
- CU ranks 14th in the nation in in free throw percentage (.784), 17th in turnover margin (+5.2) and 25th in 3-point FG defense (.274).
- Tuesday's game marks the 36th in the series between Campbell and Elon, but the first meeting since Nov. 30, 2000. The programs met 31 times between 1961 and 1977 before Campbell moved to the NCAA Division I level. Elon moved to Division I in 1999-2000.
- Paced by Henderson (11.9), Cory Gensler (9.3) and Ja'Cor Nelson (9.1), seven Camels are averaging at least 6.3 points per outing, while 11 are playing double-figure minutes.
- Campbell leads all Big South schools in winning percentage (.667), free throw shooting (.784), 3-point defense (.274) and assist-turnover ratio (1.2), while rating second in scoring margin (+6.0), steals (9.0) and turnover margin (+5.2).
- Cory Gensler is on pace to become just the 60th player in Big South history to reach 1,000 points (869) and 500 rebounds (478).
- Elon stands 0-4 on the road this season with losses at Georgia Tech (64-41), Michigan (70-50), North Carolina (75-61) and High Point (70-66, OT). Campbell is 2-0 at Gore Arena with wins over Central Penn (101-47) and Jacksonville (62-57).
- Since joining the NCAA I ranks in 1999-2000, Elon has been a member of the Big South Conference (1999-03), Southern Conference (2003-14) and Colonial Athletic Association (2014-present).
- Mike Schrage is in his first year as head coach at Elon after spending the last two years as assistant coach at Ohio State under Chris Holtmann, who coached in the Big South at Gardner-Webb.
- Elon moved into the 5,100-seat Schar Center in 2018 and will host the Camels during the 2020-21 campaign.
- Campbell Director of Basketball Operations Chris Long is a 2011 Elon graduate, who earned All-Southern Conference honors as a senior. He spent six seasons on the Elon staff before moving to his position as Campbell in July 2019.
- The Phoenix have no seniors on the 2019-20 roster with the exception of grad transfer Marcus Sheffield (Stanford), who was named honorable mention preseason All-CAA.
- Campbell stands 0-1 against CAA members this season following an 81-76 OT loss Nov. 12 at UNC Wilmington.
- Following Tuesday's game, the Camels host Johnson & Wales Saturday (1:00).
