Defense sparks Camels to 63-55 win at Ohio

100th coaching win for Kevin McGeehan

ATHENS, OHIO – Campbell turned 13 Ohio turnovers into 22 points and the Camels defeated the Bobcats 63-55 Sunday afternoon at the Ohio Convocation Center.

In a final half that included 12 lead changes, Campbell's 13-2 run over the final 3:05 lifted the Camels (9-3) to their third-straight win and the 100th overall for head coach Kevin McGeehan.

Cedric Henderson, Jr., scored 12 of his team-leading 17 points in the final half, Trey Spencer added 12, while Cory Gensler and LaDarius Knight chipped in 10 apiece for the Camels, who held the Bobcats to just 36.5 percent (19-52) shooting from the field.

Jason Preston led Ohio (8-5) with 19 points, including 10-of-12 from the line, while Ben Vander Plas added 16, plus seven rebounds.  The taller Bobcats finished with just a 36-35 edge on the glass.

Campbell built a 24-15 lead when Gensler scored off Milos Stajcic's backdoor assist with 4:38 left in the opening half, but Ohio responded with nine unanswered points and knotted the score at 24 on Preston's drive to the bucket.  However, Spencer canned a deep wing three just before the first-half buzzer sounded to give the Camels a 3-point edge (27-24) at the break.

Vander Plas scored underneath with 4:57 to play to give Ohio its largest lead of the day (49-46), but the lead see-sawed again until Jordan Whitfield gave the Camels a 52-51 edge with 3:05 to play.  After Henderson made 1-of-2 from the line, Gensler scored on a fast break, then Whitfield stole the ball to set up Henderson's three from the key that pushed CU's lead to 58-51 with 1:15 left.

Preston made two from the line to cut the Camel gap to 59-53, but Henderson dunked twice in transition in the final 39 seconds as the Camel lead reached 10.

Campbell shot 52 percent (13-25) from the floor in the second half, 42 percent for the game (22-52) and made 13-of-16 from the line (.813), compared to just 13-of-20 (.650) for Ohio.  CU finished with a 22-7 edge in points off turnovers and an 11-3 advantage in fast-break points.

The Camels, who have won five of their last six, have held their foes below 60 points and to less than 46 percent shooting in each of those five victories.  Ohio lost just for the second time at home this year (5-2).  The Bobcats' only other setback this year at the Convocation Center was Dec. 17 against Big Ten member Purdue (69-51).

The Camels open Big South play at home Thursday in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against Gardner-Webb.
