Camels sweep Oakland in doubleheader

Campbell plated 11 runs in the fourth inning of game one for the highest total in an inning since 2016

BUIES CREEK, N.C. ­- Campbell plated 21 runs over two games as Campbell swept Oakland in a doubleheader Thursday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on the first day of the Campbell Invitational.
 
Campbell opened with an 11-5 win before completing the sweep 10-2 in six innings.
 

Game 1
 
Claudia Ware drove in three runs, Bri Bryant drove in two and Campbell used an 11 run fourth inning to defeat Oakland 11-5.
 
Oakland plated a run in each of the opening three innings while the Camels stranded runners in all three of the same frames before Campbell exploded in the fourth.
 
Christa Hall (one-for-three, 1 RBI, 2 runs) reached on an error to bring home Avery Wheatley after Wheatley reached on an error to start the inning.
 
Claudia Ware (one-for-two, 3 RBI, 1 run) flied out to center to bring home Erika Richardson who reached on a fielder's choice before Bri Bryant (three-for-five, 2 RBI, 1 run) brought in Hall on a single up the middle.
 
Abby Perryman followed with a single up the middle to bring in Megan Mozingo and Bri Bryant who advanced on the throw.
 
After Mozingo crossed the plate on a wild pitch Cassie Wancheck singled to bring in Perryman. Kayla Fredendall followed an Avery Wheatley double with a single up the middle to score Wancheck.
 
Christa Hall singled through the left side to drive in a run for her second plate appearance of the inning Claudia Ware used a two out double to bring home Hall and Richardson before Bri Bryant rounded out the frame with an RBI single to right field to score Ware.
 
The 11 run fourth marked the most runs scored by a Campbell team since Campbell plated 11 against South Carolina State on February 26, 2016.
 
All eleven runs were unearned and surrendered by Kayla Marburger (0-1) who suffered the loss. Marburger went just two-thirds of an inning where she allowed seven hits and lost one wild pitch which scored a run.
 
Haley Hutchins (1-5) picked up the win after tossing seven complete where she allowed five runs – four earned – across nine hits.
 
Oakland responded with a pair of runs in the fifth inning which started when Jamie Squires (1-for-four, 2 RBI) singled through the left side to bring home Jessie Munson. Rachel Zerona later singled to center to bring home Mikayela Marciniak.
 
 
Game 2
 
Abby Perryman and Christa Hall both drove in a pair of runs and Campbell surged a 7-0 sixth inning to run past Oakland 10-2 in just sixth innings.
 
Sporting a 3-2 lead, Megan Mozingo (three-for-four, 1 RBI, 2 runs) singled to second base to drive in Claudia Ware who singled to left field to start the frame.
 
Abby Perryman (two-for-four, 2 RBI, 2 runs) roped a double to the center field wall to bring home Mozingo and Mandy Curbeira who pinch ran for her first action of the season.
 
Kayla Fredendall (two-for-three, 1 RBI, 2 runs) followed with single to right to bring home Perryman.
 
Morgan Rios pushed a single through the right side to bring home Fredendall before Christa Hall sent a walk off single to center field to plate Avery Wheatley and Hannah McCravy to seal the win.
 
Megan Richards (2-3) went the distance to pick up the win and allowed just two runs – one earned – over five hits while walking three and striking out a trio.
 
Chelsea Wiggins tabbed the loss after giving up three earned runs on eight hits while walking two over five complete frames.

Campbell returns to action in the Campbell Invitational on Saturday, February 23 against Fairfield at 7:30 p.m.
