FARMVILLE, VA. – In a game that came down to the final possession, Campbell defeated Longwood 74-72 Saturday at Willett Hall.
Chris Clemons scored 41 points and blocked a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer to send the Camels (17-11, 10-4) to their second-straight win and fourth in their last five outings.
Clemons made both ends of a 1-and-1 free throw with 12.2 seconds to play before Jordan Cintron made two from the line with 4.1 left to pull the Lancers within 74-72.
With no timeouts remaining, the Camels inbounded the ball to Clemons along with sideline, where he was off balance and lost possession. However, the nation's leading scorer recovered and blocked Shabooty Phillips' potential game-winning 17-foot jumper at the buzzer.
Campbell stayed in second place in the Big South Conference standings with two games remaining in the regular season. Winthrop defeated Charleston Southern 80-78 in double overtime earlier Saturday to improve to 10-5 in the league.
Clemons moved into sixth place on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list with 3,074 points, passing Harry Kelly of Texas Southern (3066 from 1979-83) and Keydren Clark of Saint Peters (3058 from 2002-06) on Saturday.
Clemons' late heroics spoiled a late comeback by the Lancers. After Clemons' triple put the Camels ahead 62-53 with 5:02 remaining Phillips scored 14-straight points and brought Longwood within 69-67 on a 3-point play with 1:33 to go.
At the end of the shot clock, Clemons knocked down a wing 3 for a 72-67 edge before Jaylon Wilson connected on a corner 3 to bring Longwood within 72-70 with 17.1 seconds remaining.
In his fourth 40-point game of the season, Clemons made 12-of-24 shots, including 6-of-14 threes, and all 11 free throws while playing 38 minutes.
Andrew Eudy added 14 points, while
Cory Gensler chipped in 10 – eight in the second half for the Camels, who shot 51 percent on the day, made 11-of-24 beyond the arc and 17-of-19 from the line.
Phillips scored all 19 of his points in the second half, while Cintron added 13, plus seven rebounds, off the bench, and JaShaun Smith 10 points for Longwood. The Lancers shot 57 percent in the final period, 46 percent for the game.
Campbell jumped to a 21-8 lead when Clemons hit a pull-up 3 from the wing that prompted Longwood to call timeout with 10:14 left in the opening period.
The Lancers clawed back within 30-28 on Jaylon Wilson's layup with 3:11 left, but Campbell closed the half on an 8-0 run and led 38-28 at the break.
Clemons scored 22 first-half points on 6-of-11 from the floor (3-8 threes) and 7-of-7 from the line. Eudy added nine points for the Camels, who shot 50 percent from the floor, including 6-of-8 inside the arc, in the opening period.
Longwood made just 34.6 percent of its shots in the first half, 3-of-15 from 3-point distance.
Campbell improved to 4-7 on the road this year, 4-3 at Big South Conference foes.
Clemons extended his double-figure scoring streak to 110 games, the longest among all active players and 3rd-best in D1 history.
After defeating the Lancers 83-62 on Feb. 2 in Buies Creek, the Camels secured their first two-game regular season sweep of the Lancers since Longwood joined the Big South in 2012-13.
The Camels travel to USC Upstate Wednesday (7:00) before hosting Radford next Saturday Mar. 2 (2:00 p.m.) in the regular season finale.
