BUIES CREEK, N.C. — The Fighting Camels will face their third ranked opponent in three weeks, second at home, when No. 10 NC State comes to Jim Perry Stadium for a midweek matchup Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+, and live stats will be provided at GoCamels.com. Additionally, the first 300 students will receive a free Campbell baseball 3/4 length T-shirt. Gates open one hour prior to first pitch.
Coming off a week that featured a 7-6 walk-off win over No. 9 ECU and a weekend series sweep of Georgetown, the Camels are 5-2 through their first seven games for the first time since 2015. A ninth-inning RBI-single off the bat of Luis Gimenez lifted the Camels over the Pirates, while a pair of 7-4 victories and a 9-5 win that included a season-high 12 hits aided CU's sweep of Georgetown.
Junior righty Landry Moore, a transfer from Barton College, was honored by the Big South for his efforts on the hill over the last week, receiving Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week. The Benson, N.C. native faced 16 batters across his 4.2 innings and allowed just one hit, keeping opponents to a .071 batting average. He earned his first Division I save and win in the Georgetown series.
Seth Johnson, a junior transfer from Louisburg College, made his first Division I start last week against ECU, tossing four shutout innings with five strikeouts. Seven Camels took the mound in the 7-6 win and each pitcher recorded a strikeout, combing to fan 11 Pirates.
Campbell recorded 14 stolen bases in last weekend's series against Georgetown, going 14-for-17 in stolen base attempts. Through seven games, the Camels have stolen 19 bases, which leads the Big South and ranks 10th nationally. Campbell is the only team in the Big South to steal double-digit bases through week two of this season; Gardner-Webb is second in the conference with eight stolen bases.
NC State is coming off a 7-6 extra-inning win at Coastal Carolina and enters Wednesday's contest with a 7-0 record. The Wolfpack are led offensively by infielder Will Wilson who is batting .400 (12-for-30) with three doubles and three home runs.
The two teams faced three times last season with the Wolfpack winning two, one in Raleigh and one in Buies Creek, and the Camels winning in Raleigh. NC State leads the all-time series, 50-16-1.
On May 2, 2018, Campbell picked up the upset win over then No. 5 NC State in Raleigh. The win was CU's first victory over a top-five opponent since April 17, 2007, when Campbell downed No. 2 North Carolina 7-5. With the game tied 4-4 in the ninth, Matthew Barefoot launched a go-ahead solo homer over the left field wall. NC State stranded three runners in the bottom of the ninth as Tyson Messer recorded a strikeout and a groundout to second for the final two outs of the game.
Following Wednesday's contest, Campbell will host the Fairfield Stags for a weekend series beginning Friday, Mar. 1.
