William & Mary runs past Campbell 14-5

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. William & Mary completed the weekend sweep of Campbell by scoring 14 runs on 12 hits, defeating the Camels 14-5 on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

Tribe righty Jacob Haney (2-0) earned the win as the W&M starter tossed 5.0 complete innings with four strikeouts, giving up five hits and three earned runs.

Campbell starter Ryan Chasse (1-2) took the loss, surrendering two earned runs on two hits and two walks in 1.1 innings pitched.

Designated hitter Spencer Packard (2-for-5, 2B, RBI) had his third-straight multi-hit performance, which included a two-RBI double in the fifth. The Tucson, Ariz. native finished the weekend by batting .462 (6-for-13) with two doubles and three runs batted in.

Infielders Luis Gimenez (2-for-3, 2B) and Collin Wolf (2-for-3) also had multi-hit efforts for the Camels. Campbell finished the day with four doubles, one each from Gimenez, Packard, Waldy Arias (1-for-2, 2B, R) and Cameron Witt (1-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI, R). Gimenez' double was the senior's fifth of the year, while Arias' two-bagger was the freshman's first career hit as a Fighting Camel.

The Tribe collected nine extra-base hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple from designated hitter Hunter Smith (3-for-4, 2 2B, 3B, 3 RBI).

William & Mary scored two in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth to jump out to a 7-0 lead after four complete. The third inning was highlighted by a two-out, three-run home run by Tribe catcher Matthew Therub.

Campbell trimmed W&M's lead to four runs (7-4) in the fifth inning. A hit by pitch, walk and single loaded the bases before Matthew Christian (0-for-5, RBI, R) drove in Witt (1-for-3, 2 RBI, R) with an RBI fielder's choice. Packard drove in two more with a two-out double that fell just beyond the outstretched glove of W&M's diving centerfielder.

The Tribe responded right back in the bottom half of the fifth, adding another run before putting up a three spot in the sixth and seventh innings, extending their lead to 14-3.

The Camels plated the final two runs of the day as Arias led off the eighth with a double into right center before Marcus Skundrich (0-for-2, R, BB, HBP) was hit by a pitch. Arias and Skundrich scored on Witt's two-RBI double, making it 14-5 for the game's final score.

Campbell returns to action Wednesday, Mar. 13 for a midweek home contest against NC Central. First pitch between the Camels and Eagles is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Jim Perry Stadium.
