Gimenez rips walk-off double in 3-2 win over Stags

BUIES CREEK, N.C. Shortstop Luis Gimenez ripped a double into left field to score outfielder Matthew Barefoot for Campbell's second walk-off win of the 2019 season, helping the Camels defeat the Fairfield Stags 3-2 early Saturday morning.

The walk-off is Gimenez' second of the season with his first coming on Feb. 20 when the Camels defeated No. 9 ECU 7-6 in the ninth inning.

Gimenez (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Cameron Witt (2-for-3, BB) each tallied multi-hit outings for Campbell, while Matthew Barefoot (1-for-4, RBI), AJ Hrica (1-for-4), Brock Bell (1-for-2, 2B) and Tyler Gillespy (1-for-4, R) each recorded a hit in the win.

Junior righty Landry Moore earned his second win, sitting the Stags down in order in the tenth before the game-winning shot in the bottom half. Senior righty Michael Horrell received the Friday night starting nod, striking out five across his 2.1 innings of work.

Tonight's Campbell pitching staff – Horrell, Julian Blackburn, Logan Heintzman, Jonathan Tyler and Moore – combined to strike out 11 Stags, good for CU's sixth game striking out at least 11 or more opponents.

Gillespy, a freshman from Garner Magnet High School in Raleigh, made his first start at third base and earned his first hit as a Fighting Camel in the third inning by way of a single up the middle. One batter later, he scored his first run as a Camel as Barefoot doubled down the left field line. Barefoot advanced to third on the throw before scoring on a bunt single by Hrica, putting the Camels ahead 2-0 after three complete.

Fairfield responded right back with one run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings. A single and then a double in the fourth scored one before three-straight singles in the fifth tied the score at 2-2.

Neither team would scratch a run across until the tenth when the Camels scored the game-winning run.

The Camels and Stags will conclude the weekend set by playing in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 2. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
