Camels top Chants in WBI first round 58-54

CONWAY, S.C. – Hayley Barber poured in 17 and Shy Tuelle added 14 off the bench to lead visiting Campbell over Coastal Carolina 58-54 in the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational Thursday night at the HTC Center.

Picking up its first ever postseason win, Campbell moved 22-12 on the year, tying for the second-most wins in program history, just one shy of the 1987-88 team's 23 victories. Coastal, meanwhile, finishes its 2018-19 campaign at 17-16.

The game featured nine lead changes with six ties in all, entering the fourth quarter tied at 38-all. Barber scored 10 in the fourth alone, helping extend Campbell's lead to as many as five, at 55-50 with 1:52 to play. Coastal hit just two of its last 12 field goal attempts in the quarter.

Barber hit 4-of-8 shots total in the win, including 2-of-2 from deep, also knocking down 7-of-8 free throws, adding four rebounds and an assist. Tuelle's 14 came on 5-of-6 shooting, hitting three first half threes to pace CU with 10 points at the halftime break. The freshman's 14 points led CU's 31 point attack off the bench.

Taya Bolden tacked on nine points with four boards, while Luana Serranho and Lauren Carter posted three steals each. All 10 Camels that saw action on the night scored.

DJ Williams led Coastal with a game-high 33 of her team's 54 points, adding seven rebounds and three assists, hitting 12-of-22 shots from the floor and 9-of-13 from the free throw line. Janae Camp tacked on six points and five boards, while Naheria Hamilton posted nine rebounds, adding five points.

The Chanticleers out-rebounded CU 43-27 on the night with 22 offensive boards, but converted just 10 second chance points. Coastal was also held without a three-point make, going 0-for-8, while Campbell hit 7-of-17 from behind the arc.

The Camels now advance to the WBI quarterfinals, taking on Tennessee Tech on Monday, March 25 at 7 p.m. in Buies Creek. The Golden Eagles topped Akron 73-59 Thursday night.
