BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Campbell right-hander Seth Johnson earned the first quality start of his career, tossing 7.0 innings with three runs and eight strikeouts, but the Camels fell to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 3-0 on Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
Johnson sat the Bulldogs down in order in five different innings, including the first, but the second inning was the different maker. UNC Asheville scored all three of its runs in the second frame behind four hits. The Bulldogs were held to just one more hit for the remainder of the game, finishing the night with five hits.
The first three Bulldogs reached in the second inning, beginning with a leadoff double by Brandon Lankford (1-for-3, 2B, R), who came around to score just two batters later. Greg Gasparro (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) capped off the three-run second inning with a two-out, two-RBI base hit into left field.
Junior righty Jordan Carr (2-4) earned the win, holding the Camels to five hits over 5.1 innings, while striking out three with two walks. Kole Harris came in to the pitch the ninth and sat the Camels down in order to earn his fourth save of the year.
Johnson (1-2) took the loss despite the quality start, going a career-high 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts, which tied his career best. Logan Heintzman pitched the final 2.0 innings, sitting down the six batters he faced, while striking out one.
Infielder Collin Wolf reached base safely in each of his four at-bats with a single, hit by pitch and a pair of walks, extending his on-base streak to 21 games. Including Wolf, the Camels were held to five singles. Left fielder Matthew Barefoot (1-for-4), Luis Gimenez (1-for-4), Cameron Witt (1-for-2, BB) and AJ Hrica (1-for-3) also collected a hit.
Game two of the three-game set is Saturday, March 23 at Jim Perry Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
