Camels sweep doubleheader over Charleston Southern

The doubleheader sweep secured the Camels’ best start in conference play since the 1995 season and its best in Big South play since 1994

BUIES CREEK, N.C. ­- Megan Mozingo drove in five runs including a three-run home run in game to as Campbell claimed both wins in a doubleheader against Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon.
 
Campbell (15-15, 7-1 Big South) claimed game one 9-1 in six innings before a walk-off win in game two 9-6 over Charleston Southern (9-27, 3-5 Big South).

Campbell claimed its eighth straight win by claiming game two on Saturday. The Camels have now swept its last three double headers and will go for its second straight conference series sweep on Sunday.
 
Campbell's win marked its best start (7-1) in conference play since the 1995 season when the Camels went on to claim the Atlantic Sun Tournament Title. The win also marks the best start in Big South play since the 1994 season when the Camels went on to win the regular season title.
 
Megan Mozingo went 3-for-9 with five RBI and two runs scored on the day including her walk-off home run.
 
Claudia Ware was only retired once on the day by going six-for-seven with one RBI and three runs scored.
 
Megan Richards picked up her ninth and tenth wins off the season by tossing a complete game in the first matchup before coming in to claim the relief win in game two. After opening the season 3-6, the junior has claimed seven straight wins in the circle.
 
Bri Bryant posted a 4-for-7 day which featured three RBI and four runs scored including a solo home run in game one.
 
Game One
 
Megan Mozingo and Kayla Fredendall drove in two runs a piece to help the Camels claim game one over Charleston Southern.
 
The Camels used a pair of three run frames to help secure the series-opening win.
 
In the third, Bri Bryant led off the frame with a four pitch walk before Megan Mozingo (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run) lined a double to center field to score Bryant.
 
Abby Perryman (2-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 runs) followed and singled to right center and advanced to second on the throw to score Mozingo.
 
One batter later, Kayla Fredendall (1-for-3, two RBI) banged a doubled off the center field wall to plate Perryman.
 
After Charleston Southern plated a sole run the fifth, Campbell responded in the bottom half with a three spot.
 
Abby Perryman doubled to right center to start the frame before advancing to third on a wild pitch before Kayla Fredendall plated her on an RBI sacrifice fly to center field.
 
Hannah Jones later pinch hit for Christa Hall and singled up the middle to load the bases before being replaced at first by Hall. Claudia Ware followed with a single through the right side to score Danielle Northrup from second who pinch ran for Cassie Wancheck who walked earlier in the inning.
 
Avery Wheatley capped off the inning with a single to left to plate Christa Hall to make it 8-1.
 
Megan Richards picked up the win by tossing her 10th complete game of the year which featured three one-two-three frames. She tossed 6.0 innings and allowed just one run (unearned) across four hits while striking out two and walking just one.
 
Campbell added sole marks in three other frames including the first when Bri Bryant ripped the second pitch of the day over the right field fence to put the Camels up early, 1-0.
 
In the fourth, Claudia Ware singled up the middle before being moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout. Megan Mozingo followed with a single up the middle to bring home Ware.
 
Campbell secured the win in the sixth. Cassie Wancheck drew a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to plate Bri Bryant.
 
Game Two
 
Campbell hit its second walk-off home run in six games as Campbell claimed game two to sweep the doubleheader.
 
Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Kynadi Tipler roped a solo home run to keep the Camels alive and force an extra frame. Tipler sent the 3-1 pitch over the right center wall to it, 6-6, and extend the ball game.
 
Megan Mozingo (1-for-5, 3 RBI, 1 run) followed with heroics of her own in the eighth after Megan Richards dealt a hitless inning. With runners on second and third, Mozingo left no doubt with a three-run blast to right field to seal the win.


 
Megan Richards came in as a reliever and secured the win by allowing just one run (unearned) across three hits.
 
Haley Hutchins got the start and allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits.
 
After being tied 2-2 through four frames, Campbell plated three runs in the fifth.
 
Morgan Rios ripped a three-run home run over the left center wall to extend the Campbell lead to 5-2.
 
All with two outs, Kayla Fredendall singled to right field before Kynadi Tipler singled through the left side before Rios hit her first home run of the season.
 
Charleston Southern posted a four-run sixth to take its first lead of the day, 6-5, before Campbell responded in the seventh and eighth.

Campbell will vie for its second straight conference sweep tomorrow. Game three is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
