BOONE, N.C. – Madi Story scored 19 points to lead four Appalachian State double figure scorers and the Mountaineers defeated Campbell 70-57 Saturday to advance to the finals of the Women's Basketball Invitational.
Pre Stanley added 15 points, Bayley Plummer chipped in 14, plus 20 rebounds, and Ashley Polacek had 10 for the Mountaineers (21-14), who made seven of their first 10 shots in the final period.
Hayley Barber and
Lauren Carter led Campbell (23-13) with 12 points, while
Taya Bolden added 10, plus seven rebounds, off the bench for the Camels, who made only six turnovers, but shot 34 percent against the taller Mountaineers.
Appalachian finished with a 49-35 advantage on the boards and the 6-foot-4 Plummer blocked four shots, while altering a number of Campbell attempts in the paint. Campbell attempted just five free throws (making four), while the Mountaineers finished 13-of-19 from the line.
On the night, Appalachian shot 48 percent (28-58) from the floor and made 1-of-7 from 3-point distance. Campbell trailed by only five at the break (38-33), but hit just 11-of-39 (.282) in the final half.
The Mountaineers made seven of their first 12 shots and jumped to a 15-6 lead. Campbell rallied, and
Caroline Bowns' pull-up jumper gave the Camels a 29-275 edge with 3:15 left in the second quarter.
However, Appalachian reeled off nine-straight points and led 38-33 at the half. Again, the Camels rallied and Barber's basket cut the gap to 40-39 with 7:34 to go in the third.
Campbell, which reached the Big South Conference championship game, lost for just the second time in its last seven games. Appalachian State won its ninth in the last 11 outings.
