Camels take one of two games at ECU

BUIES CREEK, N.C. ­- Kayla Fredendall plated four runs and drove in two more on the day as Campbell split its pair of matchups against East Carolina at ECU Softball Stadium on Wednesday.
 
Campbell dropped the first game 9-4 before claiming the second matchup, 10-2, in five innings.
 
Game 1
 
East Carolina used a six run first inning to jump out to an early lead and held off a Campbell surge to claim the 9-4 win.
 
Kendra Ziemba (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 1 run) led the Pirate surge by driving in two in the first inning. Ziemba doubled down the right field line to bring home Rachel McCollum who doubled earlier in the inning to drive in Ashleigh Inae. Ziemba later singled to left field to bring home Ashleigh Weingartz (2-for-2, 2 runs) for the final run of the frame.
 
Kayla Fredendall (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs) lined a solo shot that banged off the scoreboard in right center to put the Camels on the board in the fourth frame. She followed up in the fifth by reaching on a fielder's choice to bring home Bri Bryant.
 
Cassie Wancheck (1-for-4, 2 RBI) drove in the remaining two runs with a double that sailed over the center fielder's head to bring home Fredendall and Abby Perryman.
 
Erin Poepping (8-3) recorded the win after allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out six over seven complete innings of work.
 
Megan Richards (3-6) was dealt the loss after allowing nine earned runs across 15 hits in six innings of action.
 
ECU tacked one a sole in three separate innings to help secure the outing.
 
Ziemba drove in her second RBI of the contest with a single to left to bring home Weingartz.
 
McCollum later in the fourth answered Fredendall's home run with a single to left center to plate Ashleigh Inae who scored two runs on the day.
 
Ziemba closed out the ECU scoring load in the sixth with a bases loaded RBI walk.
 
Game 2
 
Kynadi Tipler drove in three runs and Haley Hutchins picked up the win as Campbell topped ECU 10-2 in five innings.
 
Tipler (2-for-4, 3 RBI) roped a bases clearing triple with the bases loaded to cap off an eight run second frame for the Camels (6-14). Her shot to right center brought home Kayla Fredendall, Abby Perryman and Megan Mozingo.
 
Cassie Wancheck put the Camels on the board first in the second with one of four doubles for the Camels in the frame which scored Kayla Fredendall who roped a double to left center to start the inning. Wancheck later came in to score when Avery Wheatley singled to the pitcher and a throwing error allowed Wancheck to come home.
 
Wheatley later came in to score when Bri Bryant reached on a throwing error by the short stop.
 
Mozingo (1-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 run) joined the quartet of doubles in the frame by lining a two-bagger to left center to bring home Bri Bryant and Claudia Ware who drew a four pitch walk to reach base.
 
Hayley Hutchins (3-6) picked up the win with a two run, four hit performance over five innings of work where she struck out four.
 
Campbell tacked on two more runs in the third when Abby Perryman singled down the left field line to bring home Claudia Ware and Avery Wheatley.
 
Whitney Sanford (3-3) rendered the loss after tossing 3.2 innings where she allowed just one earned run but eight total across six hits along with four walks.
 
The Pirates (11-6) struck for two runs in the fourth but could not inch closer in the closing frame. Pinch hitter Morgan Halo singled to center field to bring home Logan Wood who singled to left field to start the inning before Abigail Umphlett reached on a fielder's choice which allowed pinch runner Sydney Griggs to score.
 
Campbell left fielder Bri Bryant extended her on base streak to 11 straight outings after posting a hit in game one followed by a spot on first via a throwing error.
 
On Deck
 
Campbell opens conference play this weekend as the Camels host Winthrop starting with a double header on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The series will conclude with the series cap on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
