Camels split doubleheader with Winthrop

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell claimed one of two games Saturday to open conference play on Saturday against Winthrop at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Campbell (7-15, 1-1 Big South) claimed game one against the Eagles (10-10, 1-1 Big South) 2-1 before dropping the latter matchup 9-6.

Game 1

Pinch hitter Hannah Jones and center fielder Claudia Ware drove in a run each as Campbell used a two-run fifth inning to win game one of the doubleheader.

After four and a half scoreless innings, Hannah Jones checked into the lineup as a pinch hitter with one out. The sophomore sent a double up the middle which allowed Hannah McCravy to score from second base.

Kynadi Tipler started the inning with a single through the right side before being replaced as a runner at first base by Hannah McCravy. After a strikeout, McCravy stole second before being plated by Jones.

Prior to Jones' double, Danielle Northrup walked and was moved over to third on the Jones double. One batter later, Claudia Ware laid down a bunt which allowed Northrup to slide in safely at the plate on the squeeze play.

Megan Richards (4-6) recorded the win by tossing seven complete frames where she allowed the sole run of the contest. Winthrop mustered just three hits in 29 batter attempts.

Kiley Majette (3-6) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on five Campbell hits but walked one run that proved to be the difference.

Winthrop gained one run back in the sixth inning on an RBI double down the right field line from Taylor Charlton which scored Morgan Lowers.

Lowers singled to first base to start the frame before being moved over to second on a groundout before being driven in by Charlton.

Winthrop placed runners on first and second in the final frame but Richards responded by forcing back-to-back outs which featured a pop out and a ground out to Avery Wheatley at second base.

Game 2

Campbell loaded the bases on two separate occasions but stranded the runners there both times as a part of 11 Camels left on bases as they dropped game two of the double header.

Campbell recorded a season high 16 hits in the contest which included multi-hit outings for five Camels. The five Camels represented the top five spots in the lineup – Bri Bryant, Megan Mozingo, Abby Perryman, Kayla Fredendall, and Kynadi Tipler.

Leading 5-3, Winthrop used a four-run fifth inning to open up the game. Keligh Romine (1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 run) opened the scoring slate in the fifth with a double to left center to score Morgan Lowers.

Winthrop added three more in the frame including a RBI double to left center from Ashley Westbrooks (3-for-4, 1 RBI, 3 runs) which scored Taylor Charlton (2-for-4, 1 RBI , 1 run).

Bri Bryant (3-for-5, 1 RBI, 2 runs) answered in the bottom half with a single to shortstop to score Danielle Northrup.

Campbell added a pair of runs in the sixth to make it 9-6 but could not strike closer.

Haley Hutchins (3-7) was dealt the loss after allowing six earned runs on five hits and one walk.
