SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Campbell used a balanced scoring attack to down USC Upstate 59-49 in Big South women's basketball action Wednesday at the G.B. Hodge Center.
Campbell moves to 18-10 on the year and 10-7 in Big South play, while Upstate falls to 7-21 overall and 3-14 in conference games. The Camels have now won seven of their last nine games, while the Spartans have dropped nine of their last 10.
For the 10
th time this season Campbell held its opponent below the 50-point mark. The Camels also held a convincing 43-28 advantage on the glass.
Six Camels scored at least seven points in the win, with
Shy Tuelle leading the way with 11, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor and adding four rebounds and three assists.
Ashlyn Hampton posted nine points and seven rebounds, while
Hayley Barber collected nine points and six boards.
Caroline Bowns also recorded nine points with five rebounds, while
Taya Bolden and
Lauren Carter tallied seven points each. Bolden tacked on eight rebounds, while Carter posted five to go along with two steals and two assists.
Riley Popplewell led Upstate with 12 points and two blocks, while DeNisha Swain notched 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
CU took a 30-24 lead into the halftime break, closing the stanza on an 11-4 run, jump started with six straight points from Bowns, who drilled a three and came back with a conventional three point play.
Midway through the third period, an 8-0 Campbell spurt turned into an 11-2 run, putting the Camels ahead 41-30 with 4:34 to go in the frame.
Campbell's lead swelled to as many as 14 in the fourth quarter, with Tuelle leading the way with six points on 3-of-4 shooting, adding three rebounds and two assists in the period.
Dating back to 2011, the Camels have now won five in a row over the Spartans, including a sweep of the 2018-19 regular season series, claiming a 61-41 win in Buies Creek in February.
Campbell closes out the regular season at home on March 9, hosting High Point. The Big South Championship begins Tuesday, March 12 with first round games at campus sites. Quarterfinal matchups start March 14.
