BUIES CREEK, N.C. — UNCW's pitching staff held the Campbell bats to one hit on Wednesday night at Jim Perry Stadium to earn a 5-1 non-conference win over the Fighting Camels.
Blake Deatherage collected the win, going 2.2 innings in relief while allowing Campbell's lone hit and lone run of the night. UNCW starter Brody Lawson no-hit the Camels over his 3.1 innings, striking out two and walking two before he was relieved by Deatherage in the bottom of the fourth due to an injury.
Deatherage got the final two outs in the fourth on a fielder's choice and flyout, but, in the bottom of the fifth, Tyler Anshaw legged out a double for Campbell's first and only hit of the night.
Five UNCW pitchers combined to one-hit the Fighting Camels for the first time since February 28, 2014.
Senior lefty Phil Simpson was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs, two earned on five hits and no walks across his five innings of work. After allowing three hits in the top of the first, Simpson retired 14 of the final 16 batters he faced.
UNCW jumped out to a 2-0 lead by scoring a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the first. Simpson got the final out of the inning on a looking strikeout.
Anshaw led off the fifth with a double that fell right in front of the diving left fielder. The senior advanced to third on Grant Harris' groundout to second before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Christian, who lifted a 1-2 pitch to deep center field to cut the Seahawk lead in half, 2-1.
UNCW added one run apiece in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings to pull away with the 5-1 win.
Campbell continues its short homestand by hosting Big South foe Radford this weekend. The three-game set is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, April 12-14 at Jim Perry Stadium.
