BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell posted eight straight second half goals to pull away from Gardner-Webb, 18-12, Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The Camels moved to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in Big South play, picking up a victory in their regular season home finale, while GWU fell to 5-10 on the season and 0-5 in conference games.
Entering the half up 9-7, the Camels saw their lead dwindle to a single goal with two straight Runnin' Bulldog scores from Hannah Smith, cutting the CU advantage to 10-9 with 16:41 to go.
The Camels answered with eight unanswered goals, including two from
Ellie Allen, to take an 18-9 lead with 5:15 remaining, holding on for the 18-12 win. Campbell held GWU off the board for 12:52 over its decisive run, bookended by goals from freshmen
Maggie Dolan and
Laura Will.
Melissa Placek paced the Camels on the day with a game-high four goals, adding an assist with eight draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover. Allen added three goals and a helper, while
Sarah Paul also registered a hat trick to go along with two draw controls, two ground balls and a forced turnover.
Annie Pazulski collected four points, netting two goals while assisting on two more, while Will chipped in three assists with a goal.
Sam Carey also scored twice with six draw controls, while
Morgan Hollenbeck collected two goals with an assist.
On the defensive end,
Rose Prizzi notched four caused turnovers with two ground balls, while
Julia Markey and
Amanda Chasin forced two Bulldog miscues each, combining for five ground balls.
Lexie Patton secured 10 saves in goal with two ground balls and a caused turnover.
Abby Hanscom led GWU with three goals, while Smith, Jessica Vetter and Hannah Mitchell netted two each. Monique Martin caused three CU turnovers, adding three ground balls, while Katie Sylvester saved 12 shots with a ground ball.
Campbell limited GWU chances in the second half, winning 9-of-15 draw controls and committing only four second half fouls, compared to 18 for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The Camels allowed just a pair of free position attempts on the day (1-for-2), while CU converted four of its seven free position tries.
Prior to the showdown, Campbell will honor its nine seniors, Allen, Chasin,
Kylie Haarhoff, Hollenbeck, Paul, Pazulski, Placek, Prizzi and
Kaitlyn Steinbauer.
CU will be on the road for the final week of the regular season, traveling to Longwood (April 17) and Radford (April 20) before heading into the Big South Championship (April 26-28).
