Lacrosse readies for Winthrop

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell rounds out a four game home stand, hosting Winthrop Wednesday in Big South play. Action is set for 4 p.m. at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Campbell (4-7, 1-0 Big South) began its Big South slate with a win for the fourth straight season, downing Presbyterian 24-4, setting a single-game school record for goals. The Camels' 24 scores surpassed its previous single game mark of 23, set in last season's Big South Championship quarterfinal win over Radford in Buies Creek.

Campbell owned the edge in shots (41-6), ground balls (24-8) and draw controls (22-6) in the win, also punching in 5-of-7 free position attempts.

The CU defense allowed only three shots in the first half against the Blue Hose. PC's four total goals were the fewest allowed by a Campbell team in two seasons, when CU surrendered just three scores to the Blue Hose on April 5, 2017.

Sam Carey headlined 12 Camels that notched goals, tallying a career-best five goals with an assist in the win, plus a ground ball and a caused turnover, while rookie Sam Luby scored three times off the bench, adding an assist and causing a turnover for the Camels. Melissa Placek also notched four points on two goals and two helpers, grabbing a game-high eight draw controls.

Julia Markey also gathered four caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Amanda Chasin caused two PC miscues, also adding three ground balls.

Annie Pazulski leads the Camels on the season with 28 points on 13 goals and 15 assists, while Placek has punched in a team-best 19 goals with 24 total points and 69 draw controls. Ellie Allen adds 16 goals, while Laura Will tacks on 15, with Carey collecting 12 points, 43 draw controls, 13 ground balls and six caused turnovers.

On the defensive end, Chasin owns 24 ground balls with 12 caused turnovers, while Markey has notched 21 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. In goal, Lexie Patton has recorded 88 saves with 23 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.

Winthrop, making its 2019 Big South debut on Wednesday, is 3-8 on the season, coming off two straight wins over Wofford, 18-4, and Mercer, 14-12. The Eagles are led by Lauren Morris' 29 goals and 14 assists, while Mia Creighton and McKenna Blick have combined for 42 scores. Emily Torris owns 23 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls.

Campbell is 2-5 all-time against Winthrop, falling 16-9 on the road last season. The Camels claimed the pair's last matchup in Buies Creek, 17-16, later completing a season sweep of the Eagles with an 11-9 win in the Big South Championship semifinals in 2017.

Next up, Campbell will make its Big South road debut at No. 24 High Point on Wednesday, April 10. CU returns home on April 13, hosting Gardner-Webb in its 2019 home finale.
