RADFORD, VA. – Campbell kept its season alive, defeating Radford 11-6 on the road Saturday at Cupp Stadium, earning a berth to next week's Big South Championship.
Campbell improved to 6-10 on the year and 3-3 in Big South play, while Radford saw its season come to an end at 3-11 overall and 2-4 in conference games.
With win punched Campbell's ticket as the No. 4 seed in the 2019 Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship, hosted at High Point's Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C. The top-seeded Panthers, ranked No. 25 nationally, will await the Camels in Friday's semifinal round (4:00 p.m.).
The Camels and Panthers will be meeting in the Big South tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
The Camels allowed just a single second half goal on eight Radford shots, with 14 Highlanders turnovers in the second frame. Winning the draw 14-5 on the day, Campbell also surrendered just one draw control in the final half in the win.
Campbell built a 7-2 lead by the 16:17 mark of the first half on the strength of four early points from
Melissa Placek, taking a 9-5 lead into the halftime break.
Controlling possession, the Camels outscored RU 2-1 in the second half with two
Laura Will goals. Radford's only score of the second period came on Jennifer Shield's free position shot with 21:58 to play.
Placek posted a game-high five points in the win for the Camels, scoring three goals with two assists and adding eight draw controls. Will and
Morgan Hollenbeck each added two goals and an assist each, while
Annie Pazulski dished out two assists and scored a goal.
Sam Carey tacked on a free position goal to go along with four draw controls, four ground balls and a caused turnover, while
Ellie Allen and
Sarah Paul also added goals for the Camels.
Lexie Patton, who stopped four of the eight second half shots from the Highlanders, ended the day with six saves, three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Julia Markey caused four more RU miscues with a ground ball.
Shield and Juliette Ruland tallied two goals each for the Highlanders, while Emma Rogers notched a goal and an assist to go along with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Maddie Bowman came off the bench to make 13 saves over the final 47:59, adding two ground balls.
Also qualifying for the Big South Championship are Longwood and Winthrop, who will match up at 7 p.m. in the other semifinal bout.
