WILMINGTON, N.C. — Six UNCW pitchers held the Campbell Fighting Camels to five hits and one run as the Seahawks pulled away with a 3-1 win on Wednesday night at Brooks Field.
UNCW scored its three runs by pushing one run across in the second, fifth and seventh innings, while the Camels were held to just one run in the top of the eighth.
Nike Bruno (1-0) earned the win, dealing two scoreless and hitless frames in the fifth and sixth innings. He struck out three of the six batters he faced.
Ryan Chasse (5-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing two earned runs over his six innings on the mound. The rookie lefty struck out five while allowing eight hits and two walks.
Campbell did not record an extra-base hit against UNCW as Waldy Arias, Matthew Barefoot, Luis Gimenez, AJ Hrica and Spencer Packard each had a single.
Barefoot reached base safely in three of his five at-bats, recording a walk, single and hit by pitch. The Camels were plunked by three pitches on the night, moving their season total to 76, which ranks third in all of NCAA Division I baseball.
In the top of the eighth, Packard drew a one-out walk, and, with Collin Wolf at the plate, moved over to third on a wild pitch and passed ball. He scored when Koby Collins' hit a line drive off the third baseman's glove, pushing across Campbell's first and only run of the night.
Redshirt-junior lefty Julian Blackburn, a Wilmington native, took the mound in the bottom of the eighth with two outs on the board. He faced just one batter, Matt Suggs, a fellow Hoggard High School graduate (2.6 miles from Brooks Field), and sat him down on strikes.
The Fighting Camels will take an eight-day break from competition before resuming play on Friday, May 3 against Charleston Southern at Jim Perry Stadium. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 7 p.m.
