Camels defeat Longwood 13-9

CU clinches series after building 12-0 lead

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell built a 12-0 lead and went on to defeat Longwood 13-9 Friday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.

Matthew Barefoot singled, doubled, hit his 12th home run of the year and scored three times, for the Camels (31-19, 18-7), who secured their eighth Big South Conference series win of the season. Longwood (11-40, 5-21) suffered its 10th loss in the last 11 games.

Collin Wolf finished 2-of-3 with a triple and three RBI for the Camels.  Luis Gimenez and Grant Harris also drove in two for Campbell, which opened the series with a 12-1 victory Thursday night.

Campbell and Longwood conclude the series Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Longwood starter Mike Esposito (1-3) did not last the first inning. After surrendering a lead-off double to Barefoot, he walked five batters and hit another. The Camels took a 3-0 lead when Esposito hit Koby Collins with the bases loaded and followed with walks to Grant Harris and Zach Minnick.

Luis Gimenez singled in two and later scored on Collin Wolf's sacrifice fly in a 3-run second; then Barefoot launched his 12th home run of the year – a two-run no-doubter down the left field line – to push the margin to 8-0 after three frames.

The Camels tacked on four more runs in the sixth on Gimenez' run-scoring double, a two-run triple from Collin Wolf and Grant Harris' sac fly.

Camel starter Phil Simpson worked four shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out six.  Seth Johnson (3-3) struck out seven of the 11 batters he faced to earn the win with three scoreless frames of relief.

Longwood broke up the shutout in the eighth with eight runs – four earned – on three hits, five walks and an error against four Camel relievers.

In the bottom of the eighth, Matthew Christian doubled, stole third and scored on Brock Bell's single to push the margin to 13-8.

Jack Schnell finished 4-of-5, including an RBI double in the ninth, to lead the Longwood attack.
