McGeehan agrees to contract extension through 2023-24

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After leading the Fighting Camels to three-straight postseason appearances and claiming a Big South Conference regular season title in 2019, head coach Kevin McGeehan and Campbell University have agreed to a contract extension through 2023-24.

The 2018-19 Big South Coach of the Year led his team to a historic season which ended with the program's first ever trip to the National Invitation Tournament. Campbell also made postseason runs with a trip to the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational in 2018 and to the quarterfinal round of the College Insider Tournament in 2017.

"I am extremely grateful to Wanda Watkins and Dr. Creed's confidence in our program," said McGeehan. "Campbell University is a special place and I am ecstatic to continue to lead this program and strive to reach new heights. When I think about our journey to this point I am filled with pride in our program."

Under the helm of McGeehan, the Camels have won 57 games over the last three seasons, which stands as the most in a three-year span since the program began competing at the NCAA Division I level in 1977-78.

"The commitment of my staff and players has been spectacular and they have given everything possible to lead our success," continued McGeehan. "The community and campus support has been nothing short of amazing. Thank you to our fans who proved again this year that they are the best in the Big South! I am so energized by our opportunities going forward and I know the future is bright in Buies Creek. I'm proud to be a Camel!"

Following the Camels' 2019 regular season title – the second in program history in the Division I era, Campbell earned its first ever No. 1 seed in the Big South Conference Tournament.

"We are proud of the success Kevin has generated in our men's basketball program," stated Interim Athletics Director Wanda Watkins. "He and his team have brought much enthusiasm and a strong sense of Campbell pride to our campus and within our alumni base. The university has received a vast amount of media exposure through his team's success and we are excited that Kevin will continue building on this in the future."

Over a four year span, McGeehan mentored Chris Clemons, the NCAA's third all-time leading scorer. Clemons scored 32 points in his final game in a Campbell uniform to pass Lionel Simmons of La Salle.

The third team All-American as named by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, closed out his career with 3,225 points in 130 games while also ranking fifth all-time on the Division I career three point field goals list with 444. The nation's leading scorer for the 2018-19 season set Big South Conference and school career records for scoring average (24.8), field goals (1024) and free throws (733).

McGeehan recently finished up his sixth season at the helm of the program that he took over before the 2013-14 season. Before arriving in Buies Creek he served as an assistant coach at Richmond from 2005-08 before head coach Chris Mooney named McGeehan as his associate head coach in 2008 in which role he served until he departed for Campbell. McGeehan also served as an assistant at Air Force (2004-05) after serving as the head coach at Springfield High (2002-04) and Beaver College (2000-02) where he also served as an assistant (1998-00).
