Camels reunite with Wolfpack in Raleigh Tuesday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Campbell baseball travels to Raleigh on Tuesday, May 7 to face the No. 17 N.C. State Wolfpack, one of three nationally ranked, in-state opponents the Camels have faced this season. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra with live stats being provided via SIDEARM Stats. Additionally, live audio will be shared through the Campbell Digital Network with Evan Budrovich and Cole Hallum on the call.

Tuesday's contest is the second meeting between the two teams this season as N.C. State defeated Campbell, 10-1, on February 27 in Buies Creek. Additionally, N.C. State is one of four nationally ranked opponents the Camels have faced this season.

Rookie left-hander Ryan Chasse registered his first-career complete game on Sunday against Charleston Southern to help Campbell clinch its sixth Big South Conference series this season and move the Camels to 27-16 overall and 15-5 in conference play.

Chasse took a perfect game into the seventh Sunday, finishing the game with no walks and eight strikeouts to earn Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

In the series opener, the pitching staff earned its second shutout of the season and the bats went a combined .361 at the plate to defeat Charleston Southern, 14-0. Senior starting pitcher Michael Horrell struck out five, while allowing just one walk, moving his season strikeout-to-walk ratio to 5.00 (62.0 IP, 55 K, 11 BB), which ranks tied for 48th nationally.

The Camels recorded eight hit by pitches in the three-game series, moving their season total to 84, which ranks fifth in the nation.

Campbell has recorded at least one hit by pitch in all but five games this season, and 22 times the Camels have been plunked by two or more pitches in a single game (2 HBP - 7x, 3 HBP - 9x, 4 HBP - 4x, 5 HBP - 1x, 6 HBP - 1x).

The Campbell pitching staff owns the lowest overall ERA in the Big South at 3.97, a total that ranks 53rd nationally. In league play, the Camel arms own a 3.18 ERA (1st) and a .226 opponent BA (1st).

Last season, on May 2, 2018, Campbell picked up the upset win over then No. 5 NC State in Raleigh. The win was CU's first victory over a top-five opponent since April 17, 2007, when Campbell downed No. 2 North Carolina 7-5. With the game tied 4-4 in the ninth, Matthew Barefoot launched a go-ahead solo homer over the left field wall. NC State stranded three runners in the bottom of the ninth as Tyson Messer recorded a strikeout and a groundout to second for the final two outs of the game.

As a team, the Camels have stolen 78 bases, which leads the Big South and ranks tied for 34th nationally. Campbell's average of 1.81 stolen bases per game also tops the Big South, and ranks 24th nationally.

Matthew Barefoot (21), Luis Gimenez (19) and Collin Wolf (11) have recorded 51 of CU's 78 swipes at a combined success rate of 85 percent (51-for-60). Barefoot's stolen base total is tied for the Big South lead and it also ranks tied for 42nd nationally, while Gimenez' total ranks third in the league and is tied for 59th in the nation.

The 17th-ranked Wolfpack enter Tuesday on a four-game winning streak that includes a three-game sweep of Big South member Radford last weekend.

Evan Edwards leads N.C. State with a .353 average and 13 home runs, driving in 54. Right-handed junior Alec Berger, who the Camels are projected to face, owns a 4.56 earned run average and 2-0 record; he has allowed nine walks to his 31 strikeouts.

Following the midweek contest at N.C. State, the first-place Fighting Camels will hit the road for Rock Hill, S.C., to face second-place Winthrop this weekend for a Big South series. The three-game set is scheduled for Friday through Saturday, May 10-12 at the Winthrop Ballpark.
