MEMPHIS, TENN. – Playing a man down for the final 85 minutes, Campbell dropped its men's soccer season opener to Memphis 4-0 Friday at the Billy J. Murphy Complex.
Less than five minutes into the match, referee Donovan Eubank sent off Camel freshman defender
Moses Mensah after he fouled Memphis' Peter Chang on a breakaway.
Playing with a man advantage, the Tigers broke through in the 34th minute when Ben Roberts headed in Artur De Luca's corner kick.
Memphis doubled the lead in the 57th minute on Sam Ashton's diving header off Christoforos Kourtis' serve.
Jovan Prado's 71st minute header off Brendan Dexter's server pushed the edge to 3-0. Gurman Sangha finished a counter attack in the 84th minute off Prado's pass.
"It was a tough way to start, going a man down that early," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder. "We should have made it to the half without giving up a goal. Then we really were playing the way we wanted to early in the second half. But when they got the second, it really took the wind out of us. One game is not going to define our season. We've challenged the group to be resilient and bounce back."
The Camels continue their opening road trip Sunday with a 7:00 p.m. start at Central Arkansas.
