STATESBORO, GA. –
Thibaut Jacquel scored the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute to lead Campbell to a 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern Saturday night at Eagle Field.
"It was a hard-fought game on the road," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder. "We challenged the boys to continue to defend well, but create more opportunities in the second half. Fortunately, we did that and one led to the penalty that Thibaut converted."
Jacquel's third goal of the season was set up when
Jalen James dribbled into the box and was brought down by Gonzalo Talavera. A junior from Saverne, France, Jacquel sent Georgia Southern keeper Jokull Blaengsson the wrong way on the spot kick.
Campbell (4-2-1) improved to 4-1 in its last five outings with the only setback coming Tuesday at nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina. Sam Lechuga made two saves and recorded his fourth shutout in the last five starts.
The Camels finished with a 13-7 edge in shots, including an 8-1 advantage in the second period. Campbell held Georgia Southern (3-3) without a shot for the last 44:38 of the contest.
CU has surrendered only one goal in the last 550 minutes.
A scoreless first half included plenty of action, but no goals. Campbell's best chance came in the 37th minute when Jacquel's right-footed effort from the top of the box missed the top right corner of the net by less than a foot.
Georgia Southern out-shot the Camels 6-5 before intermission, but Campbell took four first-half corner kicks to three for the Eagles.
