BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell scored 31 unanswered points and went on to defeat Shaw 38-14 Saturday night at Barker-Lane Stadium.
 
In front of the largest opening day crowd (6,047) since the facility opened in 2008, freshman quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams accounted for 321 yards and three touchdowns.
 
Campbell (1-1) dominated time of possession (48:06-23:11) and ran 78 plays, compared to 59 for the Division II Bears (0-1).
 
Williams completed 18-of-24 passes for 235 yards and two TDs, while rushing for 86 on nine carries and a score.  Caleb Snead had five receptions for 90 yards and a TD, while Devarius Bargnare finished with four catches.  Johnathan Hawkins added 37 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns.
 
Campbell held a 442-330 advantage in total offense, converted 8-of-15 third downs and 2-of-3 on fourth down.
 
Campbell's defense held Shaw to just 3-of-14 third-down conversions and the Camels made only three penalties for 15 yards.
 
Shaw took the opening kickoff and drove 82 yards to take an early 7-0 lead.  Beni Kinsemi ran 16 yards on a fake punt and Torrin Campbell hooked up with Kevonta Moses on a 33-yard pass play.  Sidney Gibbs then ran in from 31 yards to put the Bears in front.
 
Williams completed all four of his passes in a 78-yard drive and Johnathan Hawkins' two-yard run plus Colin Gary's PAT tied the score at seven with 3:38 left in the opening period.
 
Campbell outgained Shaw 162-54 in the second quarter to build a 28-7 halftime lead.  Williams hit Snead on a 25-yard scoring pass on a 7-play, 83-yard drive that included a 37-yard completion to Jaquan Brooks.
 
Williams then scrambled 22 yards to cap a 6-play, 70-yard drive and give the Camels a 21-7 lead with 3:21 left in the half.
 
After a 3-and-out, Kam Prewitt's 18-yard punt return set up the Camels on the Shaw 30.  Williams then found Jalen Kelsey down the right sideline on the next play to give Campbell a three-touchdown lead at the break.
 
Williams completed 10-of-11 passes for 168 yards and two scores in the opening half.
 
Gary's 35-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter extended the lead to 31-7.  Shaw trimmed the gap to 31-14 on Campbell's 24-yard scoring pass to Daniel Bender with 8:20 to play.
 
The Camels then marched 73 yards on a 15-play drive that consumed 6:30 on the clock with Hawkins accounting for the last two yards.

Terence Harper finished with nine tackles, while Justice Galloway-Velazquez added seven stops and an interception for the Camels. Jalee Scroggins led Shaw with 10 tackles and Devon Hunt made nine stops.
 
Saturday's attendance marked the 21st sellout in 5,500-seat Barker-Lane Stadium history.  After a bye week, Campbell hosts Davidson Sept. 21 at 6 p.m.
