RADFORD, VA. – Carlik Jones and Travis Fields, Jr., combined for 39 points and Radford held off a late Campbell rally to claim a 68-63 victory Saturday at the Dedmon Center.
In a matchup of the teams that tied for last year's Big South regular season championship, Jones led Radford (8-7, 3-0 Big South) with 22 points and made 9-of-10 from the line, while Fields added 17. The Highlanders defeated the Camels for just the second time in the last eight meetings.
Campbell (10-6, 1-3), which trailed by 15 with 6:55 remaining, cut the gap to five three times in the final 2:01, but the Highlanders made 11 of 14 from the line in the last 1:35 to extend their win streak to five games.
Jordan Whitfield recorded a new career scoring high for the third-straight game with 18 points for the Camels.
Cedric Henderson, Jr., added 17.
The Camels trailed by just two (41-39) when Jesús Carralero was called for a charge with 13:33 to play, then Henderson was whistled for a blocking foul just 10 seconds later. After the Campbell bench was issued a technical foul, Jones made the tech free throws; then Devin Hutchison completed the 3-point play in what could have been a 7-point swing.
Campbell missed 10 of 11 shots during a decisive 11-1 Radford run and the Highlanders led 56-41 when Fields knocked down a baseline jumper with 6:55 remaining.
The Camels, however, responded with an 11-1 surge and trimmed the gap to 57-52 with 2:01 to play on Whitfield's free throws. Henderson's three with 25 seconds remaining again cut the margin to five, but Donald Hicks and Devonnte Holland both made 1-of-2 from the line in the final 22 seconds to seal the victory.
Radford shot 45.8 percent on the day, but just 30 percent (7-23) in the second half. However, the Highlanders made as many free throws (18-26) as the Camels attempted (13-18). Campbell finished 21-of-54 from the floor (.389) and made 8-of-29 threes (.276).
Henderson hit 6-of-10 shots, including 4-of-7 threes, had five rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Whitfield was 5-of-11 from the floor, 3-of-6 from 3-point distance, and 5-of-5 from the stripe.
After an opening period that included 14 lead changes and three ties, Radford made eight of its last nine shots to take a 34-32 edge at the break.
Campbell hit four of its last five threes in the period and had nine assists on 12 baskets in the opening stanza. The Camels shot 46 percent (12-6) overall, 5-15 from 3-point range before intermission. Radford connected on 60 percent (15-25) of its field goals in the first half, but committed eight turnovers in the period.
The Camels begin a two-game home stretch next Thursday (Jan. 16) in 7:00 p.m. start against Charleston Southern that will be televised by ESPNU.
