Camels and Lancers tangle Saturday

2 p.m. tip-off in Buies Creek for Youth Day

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell hosts Longwood Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. tip-off on Youth Day at Gore Arena.  The first 100 youth in attendance will receive a Camel replica jersey towel, and a post-game autograph session will be held as part of the festivities.

The Camels (10-7, 1-4) have lost back-to-back games for only the second time this season following Thursday's 77-62 setback against Charleston Southern.  Austin McCullough came off the bench to score 11 points, while Cory Gensler and Ja'Cor Nelson added 10 each, but the Bucs hit 13-of-25 threes and shot 56 percent from the floor overall.

Longwood (6-12, 1-4) dropped a 74-67 decision at home Thursday to Presbyterian.  The Blue Hose shot 64 percent in the opening period and jumped to a 42-25 halftime lead.  Juan Munoz led Longwood with 12 points and Heru Bligen added 11 in his first start.

  • Campbell leads the Big South and ranks 44th nationally in free throw percentage (.751). Longwood stands second in the league from the stripe (.718) overall and is shooting 75.8% from the line vs. Big South opponents.
  • Campbell has won four of the last five meetings with the Lancers, including the last three in Buies Creek.  Last year, CU swept the series with an 83-62 victory at Gore Arena and 74-72 triumph at Farmville.
  • Paced by Cedric Henderson (11.8), Jordan Whitfield (10.0) and Gensler (9.1), six Camels are averaging at least 6.0 points per outing, while 10 are playing double-figure minutes.
  • Longwood guard Shabooty Phillips ranks 22nd in the league in scoring (10.7) and 12th in assists (2.8).
  • The Camels own a 4-3 record at Gore Arena this year, 0-3 vs. Big South teams in Buies Creek.  Longwood is 2-9 in true road games, 1-2 in league play, including a 74-56 victory Jan. 8 at Charleston Southern.
  • Campbell stands 5-3 in two-possession games this season (decided by six, or fewer, points), including wins at Coastal Carolina (75-74), vs. Jacksonville (62-57), at Florida Gulf Coast (51-46), vs. North Dakota (58-56) and at Asheville (64-62).  Longwood's last two league losses have come by a total of 10 points after last Saturday's 83-80 setback at Hampton and Thursday's 74-67 decision vs. PC.
  • Jordan Whitfield leads CU with a 12.6 scoring average in league contests, while Cedric Henderson chips in 10.4.
  • After starting the year with four wins in its first five outings, Longwood has dropped 11 of its last 13 games.  The Lancers have played 10 of their last 13 games away from home.
  • Last season, the Camels earned their first two-game regular season sweep of the Lancers since Longwood joined the Big South in 2012-13.
  • Campbell (65.8) and Longwood (70.8) rank second and third, respectively, among Big South teams in scoring defense.
  • Two Longwood players are making a homecoming, of sorts, this weekend. Senior forward JaShaun Smith played his high school ball at Garner and also at Legacy (S.C.) Charter.  He has made 54-consecutive starts for the Lancers and averaged a career-best 10.8 points last season.  Red-shirt sophomore guard Juan Munoz graduated from Morrisville (N.C.) Panther Creek High School and ranks among the Big South leaders in assists, steals and assist-turnover ratio.
  • Since joining the Big South in 2012-13, Longwood has compiled a 29-96 record in league regular season play, 1-4 this year.
  • The late Jerome Kersey, a 17-year (1984-2001) NBA veteran, was a two-time Division II All-American at Longwood from 1980-84.  He made two trips to the NBA finals with the Portland Trail Blazers (1990, 1992) and won an NBA title as a member of the 1999 San Antonio Spurs.
  • Following Saturday's game, the Camels begin a two-game road stretch Monday at Presbyterian (7:00 p.m.).
