BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Two-time all-conference performer Sam Carey has been named Preseason All-Big South, and Campbell has been picked third in the league's preseason coaches' poll.

High Point was again predicted to take the Big South regular season title, earning all seven first place votes (49 points). Winthrop followed the Panthers with 38 points, with Campbell (33) and Longwood (31) close behind in the voting. Radford (23), Gardner-Webb (14) and Presbyterian (8) round out the poll.

HPU's Abby Hormes was also tabbed preseason offensive player of the year, while teammate Meredith Chapman was picked as preseason defensive player of the year.
Carey, named to First Team All-Big South in 2018 and Second Team in 2019, posted 18 points on 16 goals and a pair of assists last season, adding 80 draw controls. The Abingdon, Md. native also gathered 25 ground balls and caused 11 turnovers on the year.

The midfielder ranked third in the Big South in draw controls per game (4.71) and sixth in free position goals made (4). She was the only player in the Big South with 10 draw controls in two separate games in 2019, notching five or more draw controls in seven games. Carey scored multiple goals four times on the year, with multiple ground balls seven times, collecting a career-high six points on five goals and an assist in a win over Presbyterian, and scoring twice with three ground balls at High Point.

The Camels are coming off their fourth straight appearance in the Big South semifinals, and return 17 letterwinners from its 2019 squad, including Carey.

The Camels will begin 2020 on the road at Elon on Saturday, February 8, taking on the Phoenix to kick off the season for the second straight year. Campbell makes its home debut on Wednesday, February 12 against former Big South rival Coastal Carolina.
