Whitfield named Big South player of the week

Camels head to Elon Wednesday afternoon

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After leading Campbell to 3 wins and the title at the BSN Sports Dolphin Classic, Jordan Whitfield has been named Big South Conference co-player of the week.  He shares the weekly honor with Chandler Vaudrin of Winthrop.

Whitfield was named to the BSN Sports Dolphin Classic all-tournament team.  He averaged 21 points, 2.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals for the Camels, who defeated host Jacksonville Tuesday (80-78), New Orleans Wednesday (79-70) and Florida National Thursday (122-92).

A senior from Raleigh, N.C., Whitfield scored 17 points against JU, added a career-best 26 vs. UNO, and chipped in 20 against FNU.  He shot 67.6 percent (23-34) from the floor, made 9-of-14 threes (.643) and 8-of-10 from the line.

On the year, Whitfield stands 3rd among Big South leaders in scoring (18.5), 1st in 3-point FG% (.611), 5th in FG% (.628) and assist-turnover ratio (2.4), 6th in 3FG/game (2.38), 12th in steals (1.5) and 14th in assists (3.0).

Off to the team's best start in 9 years, Campbell (4-0) travels to Elon (2-0) Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. start.

Elon (2-0) has not played since a 76-75 win over High Point on Nov. 28.  The Phoenix had four games cancelled after a COVID-19 positive test within the team's travel party.  Wednesday's contest was originally scheduled for Dec. 15, but was moved back one day by mutual agreement.

  • Campbell has won its first four games to start the season for the first time since the 2011-12 squad started 5-0.

  • As a team, the Camels shot 61 percent from the floor at the Dolphin Classic and made 28-of-60 (.467) beyond the arc.  CU made 54 percent of its shots vs. Jacksonville, 60.5 percent against UNO and a season-best 67.1 percent against FNU.

  • Campbell's 122-point outing vs. Florida National stands as the second-highest single-game total (and most ever away from home) in the program's Division I era (since 1977-78) behind a 133-point effort against Methodist on Dec. 2, 1987.

  • Jordan Whitfield and Cedric Henderson, Jr. were named to the BSN Sports Dolphin Classic all-tournament team.  Whitfield averaged 21 points, 2.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals over 3 games.  He scored 17 points against JU, added a career-best 26 vs. UNO, and chipped in 20 against FNU.  He shot 67.6 percent (23-34) from the floor, made 9-of-14 threes (.643) and 8-of-10 from the line.  Henderson opened the event with a career-high 26-point outing on 11-of-16 shooting, including 3-5 threes, against the Dolphins.  After being limited to just 9 points due to foul trouble in the win over the Privateers, he finished with a 9-of-11 shooting day in a 19-point effort in only 19 minutes against the Conquistadors.  In three games, the junior from Memphis averaged 18 points, 3.3 rebounds and shot 68.6 percent (24-35) from the field while knocking down 4-of-8 threes.

  • Campbell players hit career-highs in 3-straight games at the Dolphin Classic.  After Henderson (JU) and Whitfield (UNO) each tallied 26 on back-to-back days, senior Austin McCullough scored 26 - including a 7-of-11 showing beyond the arc - vs. FNU.

  • Campbell has won at least two games - and claimed at least a share of the tourney title - in four of its last five appearances during in-season tournaments.  In addition to going 3-0 at the BSN Sports Dolphin Classic Dec. 8-10, CU shared the 2016 Holy City Hoops Classic crown at The Citadel, won the 2018 Rose Hall Division of the Jamaica Classic and shared the trophy at the 2019 Hilton Garden Inn/FGCU Classic.

CAMPBELL-ELON NOTES
  • Elon stands 1-0 vs. Big South opponents this year after a 76-75 home win over High Point on Nov. 28.  Hunter McIntosh scored 21 points, including 5-of-11 threes, while Jerald Gillens-Butler added 16 and 6 boards.
  • Since joining the NCAA I ranks in 1999-2000, Elon has been a member of the Big South Conference (1999-03), Southern Conference (2003-14) and Colonial Athletic Association (2014-present).
  • Mike Schrage is in his second year as head coach at Elon after spending the previous two years as assistant coach at Ohio State under Chris Holtmann, who coached in the Big South at Gardner-Webb.
  • Elon moved into the 5,100-seat Schar Center in 2018.
  • Campbell Director of Basketball Operations Chris Long is a 2011 Elon graduate, who earned All-Southern Conference honors as a senior.  He spent six seasons on the Elon staff before moving to his position as Campbell in July 2019.
  • Elon is the first of two CAA members the Camels will face this season.  CU hosts UNC Wilmington next Monday (Dec. 21) at 1 p.m.
  • Last year's 60-46 Camel win over Elon marked the first  regular season contest between the Camels and Phoenix since 2000-01.  In that game, Campbell never trailed and held the Phoenix to 35 percent shooting at Gore Arena.  Cedric Henderson, Jr., led all scorers with 15 points, while Jordan Whitfield added 12  and now-graduated Trey Spencer 13 for the Camels, who finished with an 18-6 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Picked 5th in the CAA preseason poll, Elon returns four starters from last year's squad that finished 13-21, 7-11, including CAA rookie of the year Hunter McIntosh and CAA all-rookie team pick Hunter Woods.

Following Wednesday's contest, the Camels return to action Saturday (Dec. 19) in a 4:00 p.m. tip against NC State in Raleigh's PNC Arena.
