Camels fall at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Chandler Vaudrin had a triple-double and undefeated Winthrop shot 59 percent from the floor Thursday to claim a 94-76 win over Campbell at the Winthrop Coliseum.

Vaudrin finished with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for his second triple double of the season and seventh of his career.  Five other players scored in double digits for the Eagles (7-0, 4-0 Big South) led by D.J. Burns, Jr. and Adonis Arms with 15 apiece.  Chase Claxton added 14, Charles Falden 11 and Kyle Zunic 10 for Winthrop, ranked No.-2 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll.

Jordan Whitfield led Campbell (4-5, 0-2) with 20 points, including 3-of-7 threes, Cedric Henderson, Jr. added 15, while Jesús Carralero and Austin McCullough contributed 12 each and Messiah Thompson nine for the Camels, who shot 44 percent from the floor.

Winthrop made 8 of its first 12 shots to take the lead midway through the first half and held a 47-35 edge at the break.

Campbell trimmed the gap to five twice in the second period and to 66-60 on Milos Stajcic's free throws with 9:23 to play.  However, Burns responded with a 3-point play on the next possession and Winthrop extended the lead to double digits down the stretch.

One day after playing the defending Big South champs to a one-point decision (84-83), Campbell made 5-of-15 threes, 25-of-33 (.758) from the line and finished with a 19-6 edge in points off turnovers.

Facing a Campbell team that was missing its second-leading rebounder (injured center Joshua Lusane), Winthrop claimed a 41-19 edge on the glass and a 19-3 advantage in second-chance points. The Eagles made 9-of-20 threes.

Campbell returns to action Monday and Tuesday (Jan. 4-5) when it hosts High Point at 2 p.m. in a pair of games that will air on ESPN+.
