SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman Tommy Bruner scored a season-high 30 points and USC Upstate rallied to defeat Campbell 91-74 Saturday at the G.B. Hodge Center.
The Spartans (10-13, 5-5 Big South) rode an 18-0 run early in the second period to erase a 10-point halftime deficit.
After making just 36 percent of its shots before the break, Upstate converted 66 percent (23-35) from the floor in the final period. The Spartans finished with a 39-28 edge on the glass and a 27-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
Two days after scoring 28 in a win at Presbyterian, Bruner made seven of his first eight shots in the final period and scored 21 after halftime. On the night, he canned 11-of-20 shots (8-of-11 in the second half), including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Bryson Mozone added 13 points, Nevin Zink 11 and Dalvin White nine, plus eight assists for the Spartans, who won their third-straight game.
Cedric Henderson, Jr. scored a career-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting with eight rebounds to lead Campbell (11-11, 2-8), which lost its fourth-straight contest.
Ja'Cor Nelson added 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Campbell shot 64 percent in the opening half (16-25), but just 27 percent (7-26) in the final period. CU made 9-of-21 threes (.429) and 19-of-25 (.760) from the line.
Trey Spencer's 70-foot heave at the end of the first half capped a 14-4 and gave the Camels a 44-34 lead at the break. The Camels shot 64 percent (16-25) from the field in the opening period and made 6-of-11 threes.
Henderson led a balanced Camel scoring attack with 12 first-half points on 6-of-6 shooting. Nine other Camels made at least one field goal as CU's bench outscored the Upstate reserves 18-7 in the opening half.
The Camels travel to league-leading Winthrop Feb. 6 for a 7 p.m. start that will air on ESPNU.
