Camels host Hampton Thursday night

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After playing three of the last four games on the road, Campbell returns to Buies Creek this week to host a pair of games at Gore Arena starting with Thursday's 7 p.m. tip-off vs. Hampton.

The Camels (12-13, 3-10) are coming off a 57-56 loss Monday at Longwood.  Cory Gensler led the Camels with 15 points, Jordan Whitfield added 12 and Cedric Henderson, Jr., 10.  Joshua Lusane pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds.

Hampton (11-13, 6-5) claimed an 80-70 win Monday over UNC Asheville, marking the Pirates' third victory in the last five outings.  Ben Stanley led four in double figures with 25 points, while Jermaine Marrow added 18, plus 7 assists.

Last month at Hampton, Marrow scored 37 points and Hampton rallied to defeat Campbell 83-74.  Stanley added 21 points and Greg Heckstall 14 for the Pirates, who shot 68 percent in the second half.  Gensler led Campbell with 16 points, Ja'Cor Nelson added 14 and Henderson chipped in 12.  Campbell led 49-41 with 16:24 to play.  However, the Pirates rallied and grabbed the lead for good during an 11-2 run.
  • The Camels own a 6-4 record at Gore Arena this season, 2-4 vs. Big South foes in Buies Creek.  Hampton is 1-10 away from the HU Convocation Center, 1-4 at Big South competition.
  • Seven of Campbell's 10 losses in Big South play have come by single-digit margins, including five by six, or fewer, points.
  • Marrow (24.1) and Stanley (22.4) rank 3rd and 8th, respectively, among the nation's scoring leaders and are 1-2 in the Big South. As a team, the Pirates stand 25th nationally in scoring and 6th in total free throws attempted (602).
  • Three Camels - Henderson (12.8), Gensler (11.2) and Whitfield (10.3) - are scoring in double figures against Big South competition.  Overall, Henderson leads CU with a 12.6 scoring average.
  • Gensler enters Thursday's game 1,031 points - 28th overall in CU history and 16th in the program's Division I era (since '77-78).
  • The Camels have led at halftime in 7 of their last 8 games.
  • In a 79-62 victory over Presbyterian last Saturday (Feb. 8) at Gore Arena, CU shot 56.6 percent from the floor, committed just seven turnovers and led for nearly 36 minutes.  Cedric Henderson, Jr., led Campbell with career highs of 25 points (11-14 FG) and 10 rebounds, while Cory Gensler added a season-high 20 points and became the 28th player in Campbell history to reach 1,000 career points.
  • Campbell won two of three meetings with the Pirates last season.  Hampton claimed a 64-58 decision on Jan. 24, 2019 at the HU Convocation Center, while the Camels won 87-84 on Feb. 13, 2019 thanks to a Gore Arena record 48 points from Chris Clemons.  The top-seeded Camels defeated Hampton 86-77 in the Big South quarterfinals on Mar. 7, 2019 in Buies Creek.
  • Hampton leads the Big South and ranks sixth in the country in free throw attempts (602), an average of over 25 per game.  Ben Stanley has toed the line 187 times in 24 contests, second-most among all Division I players.
  • In Big South regular season competition, Hampton is scoring at an 83.4 point clip - tops among league schools - while surrendering 84.6 points through 11 games, which ranks 11th.  The Camels are averaging 66.6 points and allowing 70.8 per outing in Big South play.
  • While the Big South Conference does not hand out a "most improved player" award, Hampton's Ben Stanley would definitely be a deserving recipient just past the halfway point of the 2019-20 season.  Stanley averaged just 4.4 points and 2.9 rebounds in 10.5 minutes while playing in 33 of the Pirates' 35 games last season.  This year, he has raised his scoring average by18 points (22.4) and rebounding mark by 4.6 and is playing 24 more minutes per game.
  • Jermaine Marrow, the Big South's leading scorer (24.1), broke Rick Mahorn's school scoring record Monday in Hampton's win over UNC Asheville.  A senior from Newport News, Va., Marrow has 2421 points, three more than future NBA standout Rick Mahorn scored (2418) in 119 games from 1976-80.
  • Both Hampton and USC Upstate are second-year members of the Big South Conference. Hampton left the MEAC prior to the 2018-19 season, while USC Upstate was formerly a member of the Atlantic Sun.
  • Prior to the 2018-19 season, the Camels and Pirates had met once during Hampton's Division I era (since '95-96) in men's basketball, a 63-62 Campbell win Jan. 15, 1996 in Buies Creek at old Carter Gym.
  • Campbell and Hampton met four times between 1971-72 and 1974-75 when both programs competed in the NAIA.  The Pirates won both meetings in Hampton, while Campbell claimed both games at Carter Gym.
  • Hampton was a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference from 1995-2018 and made six NCAA tournament appearances, most recently back-to-back trips to the "Big Dance" in 2015 and 2016.
  • Hampton is one of two historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that is not affiliated with the Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) or Southwestern Athletic (SWAC) conference. Tennessee State in Nashville is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference.  MEAC member North Carolina A&T announced on Feb. 7 that it would join the Big South in 2021-22.
  • Head Coach Edward "Buck" Joyner, Jr., comes from a basketball coaching family.  His father, Edward Joyner, Sr., was head coach at St. Paul's College, while his uncle, Steve Joyner, is head coach and athletic director at Johnson C. Smith University.
  • Founded in 1868, Hampton University is situated near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay in the Hampton Roads region.  Notable alumni include Booker T. Washington (1875), who founded Tuskegee University, former Good Morning America weatherman Spencer Christian, and NBA standout Rick Mahorn ('80), who played for the Washington Bullets, Detroit Pistons and New Jersey Nets.
  • Following Thursday's game, the Camels host Radford Saturday in a 4:30 p.m. tipoff.
