Softball drops game at No. 25 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 25 North Carolina earned an 11-1 victory over Campbell in five innings Wednesday evening at Anderson Stadium.

Campbell drops to 1-5 on the season following the loss while the nationally-ranked Tar Heels improve to 4-2.

Both sides were held scoreless to start the game as Morgan Rios picked off a Tar Heel runner at third base. Campbell scored the first run of the game as freshman infielder Noemi Cortez connected for a RBI double to right field.

The lead was short-lived for the Camels as No. 25 North Carolina took a 4-1 lead on three hits in the bottom half of the second behind three hits in the inning. The Tar Heels added three additional runs the following, including a two RBI single by Bri Stubbs, to take a 7-1 advantage

Kelsey Burkhardt capped off her 3-for-4 performance at the plate today by hitting a three-run homer to close the game out at 11-1 in five innings.

Campbell was held without a hit after the second inning behind a combined pitching effort by North Carolina relievers Hannah George and Hannah Nommensen.

Georgeanna Barefoot pitched 1.2 innings, giving up no earned runs and striking out one batter while Kayla Howald picked up two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

Diana Parker (0-1) was credited with the loss while North Carolina's George (3-1) picked up her third win of the season after pitching in relief.

The Camels return to action Feb. 14-16 as the team opens play at home with the Campbell Invitational. The three-day tournament officially starts on Friday as the Camels host Bucknell and Saint Francis at Amanda LIttlejohn Stadium.
