Game Recap: Softball |

Fredendall’s two homers lead Campbell to two wins

Campbell softball kicks off the Campbell Invitational with wins over Bucknell and Saint Francis

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Kayla Fredendall hit a walk-off home run against Bucknell and added a grand slam homer against Saint Francis as the Camels picked up two wins on the first day of the Campbell Invitational at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

Campbell moves to 3-5 on the season while Bucknell drops to 3-3 and Saint Francis falls to 2-4 overall.

Game One - Campbell 5, Bucknell 3 (9 inn.)
Campbell walked off on a Kayla Fredendall two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Bucknell, 5-3, at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Kynadi Tipler drove in the first runs of the day in the first inning after her triple to right center scored two Camels.

Bucknell picked up a run in the first on a RBI-double by designated player Lauren Lichtenwalner. The Bison would add to their total in the fourth scoring on back-to-back hits from Halie Mariano and Kailyn Lorberter.

The Camels would answer back in the following inning on four-straight singles. Destini England and Claudia Ware reached on back-to-back infield singles followed by another hit from Tipler to load the bases. Cassie Wancheck scored the tying run on her RBI-single hit to the left field.

The game would remain tied until the ninth inning when Fredendall hit her first home run of the season over the wall in right field to walk off the game.

Kayla Howald (1-2) got the start for the Camels and picked up her first career win after throwing a complete game and striking out nine batters. Bucknell's Raeanne Geffert (2-2) took her second loss of the season, striking out 13 batters but allowing 11 hits on the day.

England went 3-for-5 at the plate, scoring two runs and a stolen base. Ware, Tipler and Wancheck all added two hits each and freshman Katelyn Chisholm picked up her first career hit.

Nicole Rivait went 2-for-2 with one walk and scored two runs for the Bison.

Game Two - Campbell 6, Saint Francis 0

The Camels earned their first shutout victory behind an elite pitching performance in the circle by Georgeanna Barefoot.

Barefoot (2-2) tossed a one-hit complete game, striking out eight in yet another impressive pitching day as she picked up her second win of the season.

Campbell started the game with the bases loaded and no outs as England picked up a hit, Tipler reached on an error and Ware earned a walk. Wancheck scored the opening run in the game with a fielder's choice to the pitcher.

Morgan Rios, the catcher in the game for the Camels, provided an all-out effort play the following inning. Saint Francis put a runner on third with two outs in the top of the second. A pitch into the dirt bounced up and to the left of Rios where she quickly collected the ball and made a diving stretch down the third base line to save a run from scoring.

Ware's RBI infield single in the fourth added extra insurance for the Camels as the team picked up its third win overall to close out the first day of the Campbell Invitational.

Fredendall, in her first at bat following the walk-off homer against Bucknell, hit a grand slam home run to left field as the Camels jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

The Red Flash would end Barefoot's no-hit bid with two outs in the seventh as Halle Marion beat out a throw at first on an infield hit.

Saint Francis' Grace Vesco (1-3) was credited with the loss after giving up three earned runs on three hits and a walk. Red Flash reliever Meadow Uncapher pitched six innings, striking out two and only allowing one earned run.
